Does anybody in this forum have any advice about fashion? Good Grief! I've yet to see a make-over show on TV that features someone like me. I'm 53, a nurse who works in scrubs all day, and lives on a J.C. Penney budget. Any shopping tips, style tips, favorite on-line shopping sites, etc etc? HELP! My 23 year old daughter, who is beautiful, sexy, and always in style, says I'm a fashion disaster.

Oh wowzers, I wish I had some instant makeover advice but I don't. I do try to follow the "fashion trends" by reading magazines. Yes, they do concentrate on younger women but if you're careful you can glean the designs that will still look age appropriate and be trendy. Careful, though, because the bottom line on any fashion is this: do you look good in it? When the below the waist styles came out I had to be careful as I'm long waisted...yeah, you guessed it...if I wore that style I'd end up looking like a snake with legs! lol

Hi! I've seen a few interesting shows on "slice ' or life network - nice to see women our age figuring things out. I think style is very personal - you have to feel comfortable in your own skin but try new things.. Guess its a balance . Have fun with it- find things that make you feel good- soft fabrics , colors that appeal to you - styles that flatter.Get some basics that you can dress up or down. You don't necessarily have to spend a lot to find nice things ... how are you a " fashion disaster ?

More magazine has a lot of fashion for 40 + but most are expensive. You can get ideas though and cut out pictures and take them with you. I am 56 yrs old and also love shopping at Ann Taylor Loft and Banana Republic. Both have clearance and sale racks as well. Even if you are on a budget-it is worth it to save up and buy some basic pieces: for instance I love the fit of the Banana Republic casual pants/slacks in their Martin fit-slightly below the waist which is very comfortable for those of us who no longer have small waists!?! Extremely flattering cut! I always check their clearance racks. I think the worst thing women our age can do is to continue aging our looks by dressing "dowdy". Look at catalogs as well for ideas.

Why are you a fashion disaster?

I am 64, need to drop 15 -20 lbs and have a position as a marketing director at a smal aerospace firm. I also live on a tight budget, so I understand that side of it well. I need clothes for work and clothes for play, so it gets a bit difficult.

I do agree with a couple of other comments, i.e., find what look good on you and go with it. I watch the fashion trends and go with those that work for me. What I do try to remember, is that classic is never out of style. Use color and accessories to keep a look fresh and shop the outlets! I get many of my clothes from Coldwater Creek outlet...good clothes that wear well, definitely outlet priced and not geared to the 20 year olds.

Good luck!

I try very hard to find the balance of dressing for my age (50) and not too young or too trendy.

I have found that I can dress really well by prowling through the racks of Ross stores.

They may be messy and not well organized, but I enjoy finding really good bargains that fit me well and I get the most compliments on my best bargains. !st I look for what I think will fit, in a color that catches my eye in a fabric that feels good and does not look cheap. There are quite a few designer labels & sometimes I see the same items at the mall. Try everthing on, look in the 3 way mirror to make sure you are getting a good fit/look all around. Be patient and remember that if you get a $12.99 pair of pants, you can hem them. You can find your best colors, fit and style if you try to look at yourself honesty and positevly. Do not buy something just because it fits. make sure it is for YOU

Sounds to me like you have the best fashion consultant right at home: your beautiful, sexy, and always in style daughter. Will she go shopping with you? My one regret is that I only have one son. I love him dearly but he will never be my fashion consultant, unfortunately. Feel blessed and make a date with the DD to update your wardrobe.

Amazinglybrilliant-

Oprah online has a lot of good fashion information. Explore this site. She has some of the best advisorsshowing how to dress, apply makeup, and improve hairstyle. It is not just about budget because expensive clothes can look bad if the fit and style is wrong for the person. Learn about the best style for body type, apply recommendations found online and magazines for body type andfind a local tailor.

I also go online to Nordstroms, Macy's, etc. and look at "What's New" for plus size gals, in my case, and try to shop in my price range for similar looks that appear to work on models.

If you just do not want to put this much work into fashion update, turn yourself over to a trusted and good hairdresser, beauty experts at department store/Ulta, etc, and clerks in larger department store who have been trained to assist on such matters. Some stores even have personal shopper services to aide customers who get overwhelmed.

I too am a Coldwater Creek shopper-mainly in the Outlet section. I shop on line, have it delivered to my door, and can return it to a local store, no questions asked. I try to wait until the clothes are 60-70% off retail. I have a lot of really nice things that are age appropriate and fit well. I am 61 years old and also working on weight reduction. For shoes I have been really lucky shopping at TJMaxx. I work in healthcare and have both business attire and casual clothing. And remember that a good haircut can take years off your looks. Good luck!
