Anyone know how to get rid of this program called Personal Guard? It somehow ingratiated itself onto my daughter's computer and I can't seem to get rid of it. I've done add/remove programs, virus scans not picking it up. It keeps notifying me that I haven't run it yet but requires a license ... I don't want to run it, I want to KILL it.

Suggestions?

I have never heard of this but have you tried searching google for "remove personal guard"? I'm sure you're not the only one in that boat.....you'll probably find a forum thread about how do deal with it somewhere.

hmm ok yeah there are a lot of places with instructions ... but how do I know these sites are legit and not going to give me something else for visiting them?

YES! It's a very annoying one (this I know from personal experience; I always have anti-virus software running, but it still got through...).

I removed it with Malwarebytes, which is free, legit, and good for getting rid of lots of nasty things. If you do use it, be sure to reboot the computer as soon as it says to do so after running the scan or the virus will reinstall itself before you have a chance to remove all of the components.

Another problem with the virus is that it can prevent you from running or installing or running any anti-virus software. I had to install Malwarebytes on a pen drive and then run it from there (the best way to do that is to download the file and install it on a pen drive from another computer because the infected computer will delete the program file as soon as it appears in your file list).

The good news is that it is possible to rid of it!

Yeah I can't find it in the task manager any more to stop it, can't find it to delete, can't download the program you mention. I already tried to do a bunch of the things in the guide Capn posted but they are not working ... I am stuck. ; /

Yeah; you can't uninstall it the way you can install normal programs. It's programmed to reinstall itself repeatedly...

Try this; it should work....

1. Download the Malwarebytes installation program to a pen drive from your clean computer, not from your daughter's infected computer. It's possible to download it using the infected one, but it gets tricky when you go to install it.

2. Install the program onto the pen drive. In order to do this, you will have to change the default install location from the C: drive to your pen drive when it asks where you want to install the program.

(If you are instead doing all of this from the infected computer, you will have to open Windows Explorer to the folder where you are installing the program; then as soon as the wbam.exe file appears during the installation, you have to click it and change it's name to something else before the file is deleted by the virus.)

3. Rename the mbam.exe program file to something else (just in case). It doesn't matter what you name it as long as you remember what it is.

4. Take the pen drive to your daughter's computer and run the Malwarebytes program doing a quick scan. (To run the program, just click on the renamed wbam.exe file...)

5. When the scan finishes, click on "show results." Make sure that every box is checked and then click on "remove selected." At this point it will most likely tell you that it needs to reboot your computer in order to remove the rest of the files. Do this immediately.

Hopefully, the computer will now be clean....

Oi I don't have another computer, nor do I know what a pen drive is ... Have to do it from the infected computer. What is the windows explorer and how do I open it?

Every time I end the program in task manager it disappears altogether from there but always comes back in the task bar. I did a systems restore to get it back into th etask manager so I could find it again, then I tried deleting it with kill box on reboot which also failed. I'm betting if I kill it from safemode it will still come back to haunt me.

I dunno what to do.

Oh; a pen drive is just one of those little stick thingies that you plug into your USB port so you can carry your files around with you. You could actually use a camera card or any other memory device, too... Do you have something like that?

Okay; I was assuming that you were working from another computer and talking about your daughter's...

It will still be possible to get rid of it; it's just a little trickier...
