I also picked that up on one of my computers. Everytime I tried to download a fix, it would block it. I ended up running computer in safe mode, then downloading the removal. It worked. Good luck.

Much simpler if that works....

Nightling - To run the computer in safe mode, restart it and, as it's booting up, keep hitting the F8 key until the menu appears where you can select the option to start in Safe Mode.

Uh how do you download in safemode ... doesn't that disable all nonessential programs including the browser for the internet?

Oh; a pen drive is just one of those little stick thingies that you plug into your USB port so you can carry your files around with you. You could actually use a camera card or any other memory device, too... Do you have something like that?

Okay; I was assuming that you were working from another computer and talking about your daughter's...

It will still be possible to get rid of it; it's just a little trickier...
Right now the daughter's computer is it. My laptop (an apple) is off getting fixed. Her computer's a dell.

What's a windows explorer and how do I open it?

OK, neardc, I managed to get the malware thing you mentioned dl from the Capn's link by changing the file name like you suggested. Now something named spy doctor is scanning the computer. Does this sound like I got the right thing installed? Or is there something else I should do like rechange back the file name?

What operating system are you using? (Try selecting the Safe Mode with Networking option...).

If you can't access the internet, you can try first downloading the Malwarebytes installation file and saving it to your desktop (just so it's easy to find again). Then restart in safe mode and try installing the software.

I that doesn't work, go back to the process I outlined. To find Windows Explorer, go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories; you should see Windows Explorer listed (it's something I open all the time, so I have it in my Quick Launch toolbar).

Oops! I posted my last message before seeing this one...

Spyware Doctor is the program that CC recommended, so that should be fine. After it runs, go ahead and run Malwarebytes, too (Spyware Doctor seems to recommend using both of them together...).

I can't get the malwarebytes to run. Do I need to change the file name back or something?

The spyware doc wants 30 bucks ... how do I know that one is legit?
