I replaced 2 windows in my house a couple years ago; they're the exact same size as the originals, so no reconstruction; they're just double-glazed instead of single and low-e etc.

I did not think a permit was required for that. Turns out it is, so I'm in the process of paying a fine and other fees, and trying to get a permit so I can schedule an inspection.

All well and good. But the process is soooooooo hard! Two different inspectors have given opposite answers to the same question. Accessing different parts of the building and safety database produces contradictory data. I cannot find where in the code it says I need this permit.

Sigh. I used a general contractor, and they must have known a permit was required, but said nothing; obviously they did not want to deal with B&S (peculiarly apt acronym, don't you think? ).

What would you like to vent about?

I've been having to deal with my auto insurance company for the past few days. They completely screwed up my policy. My finance company requires their name be on the declaration page and that I carry a $500 deductible (no higher). Well, they haven't put the finance company on the policy, they made the deductible $1000 and then when I told them to change it, they charged me to change the policy!!! I'm going to fight the policy change charge. Not gonna pay for them to fix their own mistake. Not sure what I can do about the declaration page other than continue to ask them to fix it.

Contractors know when a permit "should be" required, but so many of them are willing to work around that if you don't specifically mention permits (or if you are not aware that a permit is required - "plausible deniability".)

A couple of years ago my dad hired an electrician to do some rewiring work on his rental property. He specifically told the guy that he knew that he "should" get a permit, but he had gone that route before and it was a logistical nightmare, and he wasn't doing that again. The electrician agreed. Then, when he was about halfway through the work, the electrician started talking about permits again. My dad immediately said "OK, that's fine. I will pay you right now for the work you've already done and call someone else to finish it. Great work, thanks!"
"Oh, hey now! No need to be hasty. I just said that maybe you might need a permit for this kind of work..." He finished the job without further comment.

Here's my vent:

I recently bought one of those fancy stainless steel trash cans with a sensing lid that opens and closes automatically when you approach it. It's a totally silly purchase, but it looks nice in my kitchen, and it's cool, er... I mean much more sanitary that I don't have to touch the germy lid to deposit trash in it.

I've had it for just about a month. Today it quit working. Well, I should say that it still opens and closes automatically, but it seems to have reversed itself. It pops open and stays open when I am not in range, and closes when I get near it. And just now it started opening and closing randomly by itself. I was just watching Poltergeist this afternoon... maybe it's possessed?

So, now I have to contact Walmart to tell them that their product stinks and it should be replaced. And, they'll probably tell me that I have to contact the manufacturer, which is some company in China or somewhere like that. Their product insert has a section about "Shooting Trouble" which is completely non-helpful and it says there is a 1 year warranty on the product, but I have to pay the shipping to send the product back for repair. After a month! Let's hope that Walmart actually gives a damn to stand behind their product.

Oh, and I also have a sore throat.

That sounds like it might be a little scam they run ... make a "mistake" then charge you to fix it.

What irritates me? a big corporation where the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Back on the 2nd of January, I changed my phone service: I disconnected my home phone, and added wifi. Everything else stayed the same. Simple, right? Well, since then, instead of the one bill I've always received, bundling my cell phone, internet, and home phone together, I have gotten 4 separate bills, with four separate amounts owed, with four separate due dates!

Then when I call them, after wading through their automated system, and waiting on hold for 15, 20, or 30 minutes, being told every 30 seconds that "Your call is very important to us. Please do not hang up", I finally get to talk to a real person. The problem is, every person I talk to tells me something different. And none of them agree with the bills I have received, or what I was told when I made the original change.

So now, after paying the amount online that the computer said I owed (and saving the confirmation email to prove it), they are saying I am late with my payment, and overdrawn. They have sent me several texts to that effect, and are now calling my cell while I'm at work.

So, yesterday, I get one of these customer service geniuses on the phone, and point out the email proving I've already paid the bill. He claims that I have three separate accounts with the company (the original one, and new ones for the wifi and the cell). Of course, I don't owe anything on the old account. So, guess which one they applied my payment to? He "forgave" my payment for the cell account for this month, but said I'd have to call the wifi people to settle that side of the bill. Apparently nobody can handle both sides! Which is funny, because before I made the change, handling the whole bill at once was never a problem.

Am I venting? Okay, I'll stop. But why can't these big companies figure out how to keep track of their own paperwork? If I ran my own finances that way, I'd be in jail.

What a nightmare, PreachersSon!

I have several times continued to get billed for a canceled phone service. It seems to be something standard that they do. My guess is, it pays off; enough people probably don't really read their bills and just pay?

And that's ridiculous, they can't handle the whole service in one package.

I work for what is now the world's largest technology company (after gobbling up 65+ other companies over ten years). I can totally sympathize with this sentiment, though from a slightly different angle. Getting anything done inside the company is darn near impossible because of the bloated bureaucracy that's grown like a cancer over the past ten years. It's insane.

You don't need a permit to maintain a dwelling.

And replacing a "broken" window is maintenance.

Venting? I'm here!

I bought a new smartphone a week and a half ago--on SuperBowl Sunday. I've had blackberries for years but this time I switched to an android after talking to many people, including the salesman. Since then, I am completely unable to set up my work email to connect to this phone. Of course, I was always able to set up multiple email accounts on every Blackberry I ever had in just about 5 minutes. What makes it worse is that it's not just me! My IT support guy at work (who is like a wizard with this stuff) can't set it up. Multiple reps in the store can't do it. The tech support rep for the manufacturer of the phone can't do it. The carrier's IT support can't do it. And nobody knows why!!!! All I want is a smart phone that's smart enough to send and receive my email!!!!
