It doesn't make me sad as much as it makes me angry. Anyone with this level of talent who throws it away is infuriating. In my business I see so many people with decent, above-average voices who work hard, take care of themselves, dedicate their lives to music and theatre and the arts, but will never have anything but a modicum of success, because the competition is so fierce. Then a mega-talent comes along, someone with the spark, the star power to make it, and they throw it away on selfish, weak-minded addictive behaviors. I am sad for those who loved her, and I am sad for who she was, and who she could have been.
For her I feel anger, disgust and pity.
I dunno...I'm not really angry at her as much as sad. It just seemed her drug habit became too much for her to kick and I feel empathy for her. So many times in interviews you would hear her resolve to turn her life around, and how scared she was of what she was doing. But, obviously, she kept going back to the addiction. I think it was just a demon she couldn't shake. She couldn't have been happy to lose that beautiful voice. It was shocking to hear the voice that sang the national anthem so beautifully, turn into this hoarse, raspy croak that could barely sing "Jesus Loves Me".

She didn't really have to overcome much to become a star. She was born with looks and a great voice into a musical family with ties to the industry. It was an easy fit and she had opportunities that most singers don't get. I think she'd have taken more care if it had been more difficult to get there.

I do mourn the loss.

That's a very good point, I agree. And she did seem to have 2 sides to her. she came across as bright and articulate in interviews, but on her reality show with Bobby Browb - oy vey! Sweet, innocent, charming and religious in one arena...street talkin and tough in another. Fascinating person. Is there anyone that had a better voice than her? I can't think of one.

Adele comes close to being as strong a voice as Whitney.

Talented folks I still miss:

Curt Cobain...loved his album Smells Like Teen Spirit...

Heath Ledger

Amy Winehouse...a true talent...she had mileage to last forever with that uncanny voice

...yes, they made mistakes and had their crosses to bear, but I try not to judge or speak ill of the dead...just try to remember what great talents they all were (like Whitney). When something like this happens, it is often easy to judge, get angry, but I think of their families and figure they're just as angry that these talented people wasted their lives on drugs and alcohol. I had a family member succumb to alcohol and drug abuse...a very talented and promising cousin. Trust me...when the pain of loss faded, I was angry, we all were. Sad, but can happen to anyone. It just makes it that much sadder when they are celebrities who are bigger than life with such great hope and promise. ...(and we still don't know what killed Whitney, but her life really became a mess until recently when some said she was finally cleaning up her act. Don't know how true that is either....guess we'll just have to wait for the book or movie to tell it all.)

In regards to the flags in Jersey at half-mast, that was a decision the Governor made. As a person who was a born at Fort Bragg, and have loads of ex-military in my family, I didn't understand the flag thing, but NJ was always very proud to cite Whitney as one of their own when she was living, and I guess they wanted to acknowledge her as a famous Jersey-ite. It is what it is and I'm not going to second guess Christie's motives. He seems to be a level-headed person, so I suppose he had his reasons.

Just to bring everything into perspective, I was watching the 90 year old woman's tribute to Whitney...very cute...if she can just dewell on the good things about Whitney, so can well maybe. Let's just wish the best for Bobbie Cristina and say a deep sigh...it's done...time to move on (imvho).

God Bless to everyone...hug your loved ones tightly and pray for those who are not here anymore because they were not strong enough to deal with their addictions (and pray for their families).

Thereby for the grace of God go all of us....
