My family is quite large. With three brothers and a sister (all older) and many cousins, we always had a houseful for the holidays. Now, with most of my siblings and I having children, its an even a larger group.

One thing we did as youngsters was to sometimes buy joke gifts or do a huge amount of "show" for an itty bitty, tiny gift.

One year my brother loaded a huge box with some old encyclopedias, hiding my sister's gift among the books, and wrapped it as well as he could. Another year, the same brother, had me "help" him find a gift for a cousin. I was surprised Christmas morning to find out I had picked out my own gift! Sometimes we would purposely not wrap a gift for someone and act as if we forgot.

This year my sister asked my parents for a set of sheets for her gift. I happened to be shopping with my mom when we ran across what I thought was the "perfect" set for her. They are Disney brand Jonas Brothers sheets. I am also doing a huge wrapping job on this one. So far it is in two boxes, one wrapped in tissue, the actual set of sheets wrapped in a cut up paper bag, Styrofoam peanuts are cushioning one box inside the other and I plan on finishing it off with some fancy paper and tons of bows and ribbon! Oh, and I was sure to make the box have "this side up" indicators all over it. (These sheets are worth a mint you know!)

Does anyone else do this kind of gift giving among friends or family?

I had a gag tradition for about a decade where I wrapped men's gifts in newsprint of "page 3 girls". They were always received with a smile!

I had an uncle that gave me money each year for Christmas. What he did was hide the money in some sort of other "boring" gift. One year, it was a really ugly old tie. The money was tucked inside the tie. Another year he stuffed the money inside some gloves.

I thought about doing it this year. Everyone is getting a very small (in size) gift, or a gift card, so I thought maybe I'd get some bigger boxes to wrap them in and make it more interesting. I hate giving gift cards but that's all my brother and step brother asked form, and the only other gifts I could think of that they would like would be out of my budget :-/

Well.... my sister was sick tonight so she didn't open her gift. I'm not going to let her do it without me there!

We always did things like this when I was growing up, Andie. I can remember so many times when one or the other of my parents would wrap rocks or a hammer or something else crazy in the box to change the weight or the sound it made when it was shaken (not stirred!). One time I remember my dad wrapped up a picture cut out of a magazine to tgive my mom when the store ran out before Christmas. Another time, he bought her a new watch but knew that she would figure out what he had for her if he came out of the store carrying such a small bag so he also bought footy pajamas to wrap it in! Things like that create great memories, don't they?
