The fun tonight in FNRC seemed catching almost. So, I'll give this thread a burl and let it cark it naturally if it doesn't take off.

A few people have commented to me they'd like to learn to pull off the Aussie accent, so let's try some common words or phrases which every international person I've encountered has asked to me recite for them. And then totally cack up laughing.

Edit to add: I'll flick up some stuff which is common, but feel free to ask me stuff too.

G'day, Mate!
A very popular Aussie saying. I use it daily.

G'day
G'day is Good Day. It is simply the 'ger' sound of ground, followed immediately by day. No pause.

Mate
Aussies tend to drawl a little over the vowels ... the 'ate' part is not pronounced like eight. It's more the 'ai' sound in maid.

The Alphabet

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z

H - is often pronounced 'haitch', not 'aitch'.

R - is pronounced 'ah'.

Z - is pronounced 'zed', not 'zee'. Hey kids; look at the zehbra!

************************************************** **
~ words ending with er are generally pronounced 'ah'. Smartah, weathar, fastah.
~ sometimes t has a ch sound to it ... I'd like a chuna sandwich while chuning the radio. I'm stchupid today!

Whoa Meri!!! This thread is completely spot on and informative!!! I think with what I've already learned from this thread I can almost pull of an Aussie accent. Oh and just so that you know it has been my experience that American men and women love English and Aussie accents.

Is "mate" gender specific, do you only say it to men? If so, what do you say to women?
