Oh, no, no. What I intended to say related to those countries which have a prime minister as the head of government, and a president as a head of state. The power may be shared, or rest principally in the hands of one or the other. The presidency may in some cases a largely symbolic position, with all the real work being done by the prime minister. In others the prime minister is in effect a deputy for (and subordinate to) the president.

In a republican model for Australia, two things could happen. Since a large part of our constitution was based on the American constitution, an Australian president might take on a similar role to the U.S. President. This would include the limited ability to rule by decree, in effect (the mechanism is called an executive order, there).

The other possibility is simply to devolve all the remaining powers of the Crown to the president. This would include a power of veto ( which the U.S. president has, and like the Queen does not by tradition use it). This doesn't mean that they can't, though.

I suppose the thing I like is the habitual position taken by monarchs to stay out of politics. A president would very much be in the politics.
Thanks for clarifying that. I don't like the power of veto, even though the Queen and the Governor-General rarely use it, I don't like that it is a power they can invoke. I especially do not like that this power includes the ability to dissolve government elected by the people. I see this happen at work sometimes (which, I know, completely different environment), I absolutely loathe it when I or my department have done something which is required by the business for the good of the business and then someone who has more authority, and usually from another area, comes long and overrides it. It always causes a mess, which I get to clean up.

I'd be concerned that we'd see something similar in Politics, only it would be the Australian public trying to clean up the mess.

Theres nothing quite like a healthy debate, is there? Each side listens to what the other has to say, and learns from it. The alternative really does degenerate into something like the 'Halal Vegemite' Facebook page, where people are apparently not listening to themselves, let alone anyone else.

(I was sent to moderation for the word 'titular'. I should have said nominal instead) heeheehee

I agree. I find it to be the most effective way to learn.

Halal Vegemite? I don't believe I've seen that page. Yet. I am so glad it is back to being called Vegemite though, after I-snack or whatever it was called for awhile. Bizarre.

Okay, another Aussie-ism used a lot in everyday speech.

Cruisey.

It means 'easy' or to 'take it, have it easy'. Um, let's see, to have a cruisey lifestyle would be to have a carefree lifestyle!

One of my favourite words and I can use it sarcastically too. 'Hey Meri, how's your workload?' A: 'Deadset cruisey', indicating otherwise with tone and facial cues! lol

I-Snack 2.0 still exists, it's just in a jar labelled Cheesymite. It's Australia's version of New Coke.

By the way, the storm in a teacup that is the Halal Vegemite page is (naturally) full of trolls (and people who need to stop and take a breath). The product always met halal standards, it's made of vegetables and yeast. There was never anything in it that conflicted with halal. People noticed a new thing on the label, got the wrong end of the stick and presumed that the recipe had been changed.
