Rockingham WA is the Bogan capital of WA. There are female bogans who regularlly go to pubs with their female mates in their pajamas.
Do you live in Rockingham ?

Is "mate" gender specific, do you only say it to men? If so, what do you say to women?

For the most part women do not use the term mate. I am femaleand I use it only when trying to catch someone's attention (like a salesperon or someone who had dropped something). "Excuse me, mate". I would only use this if I was trying to catch a man's attention. I doubt I would ever use it to a female. The only posible exception would be on a sports field or some similar physical exertion exercise. Even then, I usually use the term"ladies".

No, I live in the Western Suburbs of Perth. Rockingham is about 20km south, and a world away. Where do you live?

Inner Northern Suburbs. The intersection of Beaufort Street and Walcott Street has been the centre of my world for the last 15 years.

Ahem, is it possible that we have been matched in the past ?

Here in The West (Perth, Western Australia), we have bogans. Bogans are trashy sorts of uneducated people.
Yes, Tassie has bogans as well. The term is used to describe people who take little pride in their appearance. Education has nothing to do with it. Interesting interpretation variance!

So that's why the Brisbane Cricket Ground is called the Gabba, why is the Royal Agricultural Society Show called the Ecker ?
The Ekka was formerly known as the Royal Queensland Show and later was changed to Brisbane Exhibition ... Ekka (our love of abbreviations hard at work!)

The Royal Agricultural Society of QLD is held at Toowoomba and known as the Heritage Toowoomba Royal Show. This is QLD's oldest Show (Fair), commencing in 1864 ... Ekka did not start until 1876. The Darling Downs are a gorgeous area to visit, and as you might expect, rich with agricultural history and trade.

Ute = Very similar if not the same as an El Camino which used to be manufactured in the US.
Well, El Camino and the Holden VE Utes are both products of General Motors. When I think of Aussie Utes, this is what I picture the below ... not the sleeker version of the VE Ute.

I have heard "sunshine" used as a derogatory term for someone who has irritated you. You use it when you are telling them off or showing displeasure, ie "Good one, Sunshine!" (sarcastic) or "Now look here Sunshine....."
Yes, I've heard that too ... if you've irritated me, I'll usually call you a moron!

I'm female and I do use it with both genders, though as I wrote earlier, it is easier to call men 'Mate'. I never use the term 'ladies' except to indicate I need to use the toilets.

I think the use of Mate - regardless of gender - may just be a personal choice or level of comfort with the word. I grew up in rural areas, where Mateship is something of extreme importance. Your Mates were and are everything. They got you through the drought or the floods, when you had no money for food, you'd come home from work and find a small hamper or a stew sitting in your kitchen. I have never, ever experienced this since moving to the City. In the City, you're on your own and very few people are willing to give you a fair go.

While it is possible that we have been matched, it is unlikely we had any correspondence. I think I have only met one person through EH and have only corresponded with a few. I have over 200 matches I haven't even looked at. I'm not that motivated really as I am seeing someone.
