Just got a chance to watch this:

Tiger Woods says, 'I am so sorry' in public apology - CNN.com

What do you think?

Was this necessary? Why? Do you think it was effective?

I guess it doesn't matter a whole lot to me one way or the other. His focus now is rightfully in repairing his relationship with his family and in figuring out how to be a better husband and father.

It's possible that the public apology is part of his treatment (i.e., apologizing to those he's hurt, and the public would be included in that...), especially since he didn't permit questions. At this point, though, the work that he's doing really is a private matter as far as I'm concerned, and I hope that people will see fit to leave him alone until he's back on the golf course.

I personally think (just hearing the audio this morning on the way to work) it didn't sound sincere. He probably had a team of lawyers and image consultants crafting that letter of apology. I look at it more of a PR damage control more than anything.

The only person he has to convince is his wife. I think he had to issue that public apology for many reasons. I sincerely hope he can change his life and repair his marriage, but only time will tell if his desire to change is authentic. The apology was pretty scripted, but then so are all of Obama's speeches.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what I think. It's his life to live or throw away.

I think he was sincere. Look we all can cast stones, but we all have issues. I really hope he can beat the sexual addiction. It's a huge issue with guys (and not talked about much). We live in a world where the media gives us a constant stream of garbage and then we are surprised when something like this happens.

It sounded extremely scripted... which isn't as genuine.

I want to add something, because I'm reading the book Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell, which talks about decision making, and I'd like for people to try this, then post what they think.

In the book Blink, the author mentions a study where people are supposed to evaluate a video of someone talking, but the sound is down, and see if they are lying or not.

So I did this, and I got a sense of genuine sorrowness, stoicness, and a general dampening of emotions.

What is everyone else's impressions?

And the book I mentioned is really quite good! I'd recommend taking a look at it if you can.

I agree with nearDC's take on it.

I also think the public apology was necessary - because of the involvement of the media, this is something which we should never have known about. It's none of my business and I would think that is applicable for the majority of people who saw or read about it. His wife and family must have been terribly hurt by the fact the media made his activities public.

I thought he looked sad - yes, it seemed scripted. I reckon that would have been done by his lawyers and management team in order to minimise further fall out. He may have asked for their help; I probably would if I knew I had to give a public address of this gravity.
