Tokyo man marries video game character - CNN.com

Did you guys hear about this?

What are your thoughts?

The most interesting thing about this article to me (believe it or not) is that "Love Plus", a "game in which players nurture a deeper relationship through game playing", exists and is so widely played. Here's a link:

Buy Love Plus (Nintendo DS) - Play-Asia.com

What do you think - can people learn relationships by playing a game like this, or are we growing a generation of socially inept individuals who will settle for pixel partners instead of real partners?

I've heard of a battery operated boyfriend before, but never a battery operated wife!

Oh fuzzbuckets. Not this again.

It’s another Japanese invasion thing, I think. As you’ll see in the comments section on that page, this game falls into a genre that we don’t really have in the U.S.: dating sims. Back when I was a teenager and still in contact with the anime/manga crowd, this was a coveted import for a very select group of people, namely, extremely introverted socially inept otaku just beginning to get the idea of sex (if only conceptually). Picture this: geeky teenagers with raging hormones, terrified of approaching a *real* girl, then suddenly there’s something that puts dating girls into a video game where they can understand it. It didn’t seem to promote social skills or encourage the players to get out into the real world, however…

I must say, though, getting dumped by a virtual girl has got to be one of the saddest things. Seriously. IMHO, this is very much the latter thing that you mentioned Miss Lori. These dating sims tend to make the player more introverted and disconnected from real life. That said, it remains a solid marketing ploy and a consistent money-maker for software companies who choose this route, as there will always be desperately lonely people, socially innocent otaku, and teenagers who will buy this kind of product.
