Banged up my car a couple weeks ago. Was able to drive it away from the scene (and for the following days). Brought it to a part time garage the following day (a Sunday). This past Thursday, we brought it to the garage for repairs. The rear passenger door, front right fender, and front bumper are getting replaced. It's a 2 person garage that is run part time. They already had the new door when we brought it in for repairs on Thursday. With the assumption that all pieces need to be painted too (i know the door needed a paint job), how many days do you think I can expect to wait? Its already been 5 days. The labor time initially given/estimated was about 30 hours. (i think it was 32 hours with 2 doors instead of 1)

I had a bumper replaced and it took a full time place 5 days to get it done. This included the time it took to order and ship the part. You should call and find out how much longer it will be.

30 hours working 1/2 days is close to 2 weeks.

no collision insurance. The garage said an insurance company would have just given me money to buy another car. Not what I wanted though.
The garage is run by my step uncle and his Dad. Right now, I think we are trying to be patient and let them work on it without interruption, but the wait is driving me nuts. One concern about asking how much longer it will take is that it will make them work slower.

Being family usually puts you at the back of the pack even if you are a paying customer. If it was the other persons fault, you should get a loaner through their insurance company.

well, they didn't exactly have cars lined up to be repaired. When we took it to get looked at they were working on their own restoration project. Single car crash. All my fault.
Either way, I just want my car back and fixed. It is after all, my first asset.

When one of the tires exploded on my van, and blew out most of the front quarter of it, it took just over two weeks to fix. Although, you may not want to go by me -- I found out later that part of the time was spent stripping "optional" parts off of my van to fix other vans as part of a weird giant scam some guy was running out of the body shop.

It is kind of funny but one place that I go to gets more or less all of their cars back out that day. They have a good dozen people working that garage.

The only problem is that I might only recommend them if you actually need the car the next day. They charge you for it either way.

I had a 2nd car at the time of my repair & didn't care how long it took. So I paid next day delivery prices when that wasn't a priority.

They are extremely good though... just sometimes too good.

I've never had cosmetic work in less than a month.

Negotiate for what you need and get every commitment in writing.

It is better to let them take the time they need than rush the job and devalue your asset forever.

When dealing with a shop who is also an indepenent used vehicle dealer, negotiate for a loaned vehicle (costs them little but saves you a fortune.)

In the event you have a family connection, offer to trade some personal labor for a discount.
