I get a chuckle out of people who use +1. +1 was used exclusively in gaming forums. +1 signifies sarcasm and lameness and not approval. It derived from D&D, MUD's and MMO's (MMORGP's). When a person creates a Character or Avatar that character or avatar has certain bonuses based on class or race. These attributes are symbolized by +'s (pluses). The scale is +1 to +20 on character creation, varying on the game and rule set. Additionally 'pluses' are beneficial stats (Range +1 to +900) that can be found on items or are part of spells that give benefits known as Buffs or minuses known as deBuffs.

+1 is used in a sarcastic tone:

“Dude, Ironbreakers are getting nurfed +1”

“Ur class is the sux0r +1”

“You made a brilliant point, +1” *sarcasm.

“They cheated and hax0red using a MOD +1”.

“4 t3h w1n !1!! +1”.

Using just numbers and a mixture of letters such as 733t or 1337 is known as Leetspeak. Its derived form ASCII Characters to replace Latinate letters.

You think its cool using gamer language incorrectly.

Sounds like a work conversation over lunch (I work in IT as a non-techie). My response usually is, "Translate that into English for me, please?" LOL

How could we be using gamer language incorrectly since most of us don't know any of that stuff you just wrote about? Besides, this isn't a gaming site. And your point is...?

Its like any social phenomenon or fad, people pick it up from other sources without knowing its origin or use. Here people use +1 to show they approve or support what people are saying, however in the gaming community its used as sarcasm to infer a sense of lameness or a weak point.

So a gamer would have responded to your post with disapproval by saying.

N00b +1
