Everyone I talk to is all about "networking". Get to know as many people in your field as you possibly can, even those NOT in your field. Get constructive criticism on resume/portfolio/interviewing strategies...

A while back I went to a networking event where folks brought resumes and portfolios and we took turns in groups critiquing and trying to offer helpful advice.

Once the event was over, everyone got a package with everyone else's contact information and if they had them, websites.

Since I lost my job a couple weeks ago, I have been going through that list and trying to reconnect with some of the people on my list that I got along with the best. I was also going through their online portfolios/websites.

I came across one that had several definite rip-offs of a few of my projects. Maybe different colors were used, or different fonts, but without a doubt, my designs.

While I have heard that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this is work I poured my heart and soul into and to see it copied, modified and someone else's name on it, truly rubs me the wrong way. I feel like I have been robbed.

Would you confront them about their "theft" or just forget it and move on? This is someone who is also, I found out, not employed right now, and quite probably applying and interviewing for the same positions as I am. How is it going to look to a prospective employer that they get 2 interviewees that have the same projects, but with subtle differences? Mine were school projects and this person didn't go to school with me, so I am not sure how they will explain the project... I at least, have them labeled as instructional projects with details on the scope of the project... So I can back my designs up...

You bet I'd confront them.
You may have to get a lawyer involved if they don't own up to it, but in the end I believe it would be worth it.
Like you say, this is your career...and chances are if the person is doing it to you, they've done it to others.

When it comes to copyrights, it does not take much altering to dodge the issue and the person did alter.

When it comes to employers.....they are not stupid and what they will ultimately evaluate is your individual skill set. I interview a lot of people and trust me, I can tell a faker. It's not hard. In fact obscenely easy when it comes to jobs that require either technical or creative skill sets.

Either way, if you choose to confront them about it, be careful of what you tell them. You don't want to feed them more information on your projects and how they were done, etc.

Is there someone at your networking group that you can approach that knows both of you?

Unless your work is copyrighted, if you show it to someone, it's fair game for being knocked off ... although admittedly bad taste.
