I teach in NYC and have the day off today for Yom Kippur, but I have read posts from other teachers in the U.S. that say they have less days off and do not have paid summers.

Just wondering if any other states give teachers all the Jewish holidays off and if they have paid summers.

(sorry...bored today and just wondering about all sorts of stuff...)

i am not a teacher but have lived several places including most recently NY. NY school districts were the only place i've seen dismiss school for jewish holidays.

I'm at lunch and saw this, so no, I'm not off today. As for paid summers, no teacher gets paid FOR the summer unless they teach summer school under a separate contract, but they may have their check divided up over 12 months instead of 9 if their distict makes allowances for such a thing (thankfully mine allows me to divide my check up over 12 months). Teachers sign a contract and are salaried employees; they are contracted to work a certain number of days for the salary they earn.

I am off today. And brneyedangel is correct... most districts allow you to choose either a 9 or 12 month pay schedule.

Wow....NYC does not give that choice...but we get paid for a 12-month year.

But I worked at a private special ed school that gave the 9 or 12-month option...and you could collect two paychecks if you were a 9-month teacher and also worked summer school.

We have all Jewish holidays, ecumenical holidays, secular holidays, Thanksgiving, winter break and spring break...and we are mandated in the middle schools for at least 3 preps a day...but with the new contract and starting salary increase 3 years ago, the Mayor added on 37 and a half minutes to the teaching day, so we have to come in earlier or stay later.

I was just curious....because I will be relocating in two years.

Thanx for the repsonses all!

I've taught school in TN and in FL. We didn't get Jewish holidays in either place. I would suspect that if there is a large Jewish population that might be different, however.

I also got paid for 9 months, but had it divided out over the year. In at least one district, we no longer had the option of choosing 9 or 12; we just all got paid for 12 months.

We work on a 26 or 26 with lump pay system. That means you can get paychecks from September-June, and that's it. Or, you can get a smaller paycheck from September-June with a big check at the end to cover Summer expenses.

As for the Orthodox Holy Days, any teacher who is Jewish or Muslim can get their Holy days off and it does not count against their pay-but it *does* deplete their personal days. Since Public Schools are supposed to be separate from Church, it is not seen as favoritism to Christians. We can't even call the December break "Christmas Break" by law-so the idea is that if ANY religion's holliday falls on a work day, you can take it off-at the cost of personal days accrued-but not a deduction in pay.
