I've really come to value a lot of the opinions and advice in this forum and would like some insight into my situation and maybe knock down some of the obstacles in my path toward success in the working world as well as find out if any of you have had similar experiences and how did you go about addressing these issues.

Hi, PR Princess. I am really glad you are getting a lot out of the boards. I must say I have seen some really good posts from you as well.

While I haven't had to deal with racism or nepotism in the workplace I do feel like I have had to work harder and smarter to be treated as an equal in my profession. The best advice is to just let any frustrations from being treated unfairly motivate you to work harder to prove others wrong. People really do notice in the long run. I now work for myself and I think this philosophy helped to get me to the place that I could do this.

I think Oprah said it best when she said: "Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment."

You just deal with it. Consistent hard work and professionalism will reap rewards, just maybe not as quickly as someone who has the right gender, right complexion, right family/friend connections, and the right physical appearance. And when you achieve that success, you are less likely to squander because you actually had to work for it.

It is so complicated, ya'll, and it doesn't even have to be.

Nepotism is everywhere at my job, and how we deal is that we check out the classifies on a regularly. It makes us feel better. We put in applications, and think that one day we'll be able to retire....or at least move on to a better existence. We create short-term goals like to make it to the end of the week without choking someone. Did I say week? I meant, end of the day. But seriously, we take it minute by minute, tell plenty of jokes, and once we're signed out for the day, the job stays and we go live our lives. That's how we deal....cope....One day, I'm pretty sure we'll all end up in therapy.

Unless you are the owner or one of the owner's favorites, there really isn't much you can do or say that would matter. What you can do that does matter is stay true to your own beliefs and values and go to work each day to do your job.

Although it is nice to have a work confidant at one point or another anyone you work with can turn on you like a mad dog. Keep your work life at work and your private life private. I've been working for 35 years and it took me about 24 of them to learn this.

There will always be unfairness in the workplace as there is in life. You need to tell yourself it's not personal, it's business because usually it is. Sometimes it does involve an ego, a promise, a fear, or a directive but it is typically a business decision.

Remember you go to work to support your life. If you are in the field of your passion but despise your workplace, look around until you find the place you mesh with. If you despise your job and your workplace look around for something different. If you love your workplace but despise your job you are in it for the social aspect which will not serve you well as time goes on.

You could always become the next entrepreneur, or start something on the side, or take a class, or excel at a hobby to assure yourself of you own inner power.

One more thing...don't ever let anyone make you feel less than what you are.

Good responses as always I'll have to print this out for myself as I continue to search for a place to put down some roots and grow professionally. For some reason I feel I'm going to find some sort of relief down the road and definitely your words will help keep my mind open to the possibilities. Thank you, I appreciate you all.

Absolutely, I have to agree.
On my end, I feel I need to work harder, be smarter, in other words, the pressure is on. However, I just deal with it. I, as you said, take classes on the side for personal enrichment and I do have that mentality, " don't let anyone make me feel less" and you know if they ever do, which it will happen, just brush it off and walk tall. Keep your work life at work. This is not to say not to share anything. Share a few things, vaguely but don't divulge too much, otherwise, there will be people that will take that and run with it. Treat people at a distant, don't let them get too close, you want them close enough for some comfort, now, let's not get too comfortable because that's where trouble will find you.
On a personal note, I am the only hispanic in my dept. Now, that tells you, there is no diversity and I've personally seen nepotism. I stand tall, work very hard to do my job because at the end, you're there to excel at your job and nothing else.
