my annual review is coming up, I think the firm is going to lay ppl off. so I've to prepare well. anyone could help with my Qs?

1.one of the small project I did lost money, the real reason is projects are dried up and I was not given any other project, so i ended up putting too much hr on it. should I bring it up? and should I admit my inefficiency of managing time?

2. I want to complain about an unprofessional manager but I know the firm wouldn't sacrifice him for me. so could I hint that "I'm happy about my exp. here, MOST project managers are very professional and have company's best interest in mind".and if asked about it, I'll only focus on myself. will it work? or I shouldn't do this?

thanks a lot.

Greetings-In my career, managers were required to do annual performance evals, but in reality I went maybe 7 yrs w/o one. When they want to start a paper trail, that's when they start to do them. I guess it depends on private sector v. gov. My bad p/e was actually overturned and my supervisor's supervisor had to redo it. It was just so obviously biased. I mean, if there is a problem, why do you wait 7 yrs to tell me? But in this economy (I retired from the State of CA) it's increasingly important to hang on to your job. Unless you want to move to the "sunbelt". So say as little as possible, really listen to their questions, and volunteer little info (unless it makes you look good in the big picture). And the very best of luck. Best, siren

Please don't take this as an insult but I hope you prepare better to answer [or not even bring up!] some questions. Better is to emphasize positives. NEVER bring up negative matters unless you HAVE to clear something up/put a positive spin on something. Short and sweet is best.

Please check out "Knock em Dead-Job Interviews" to get a better grasp of what to say. And what not to say. There might also be pertinent information [books] on annual reviews. But Knock Em Dead is the Nuclear bomb per understanding the give and take process of presenting yourself & your achievements in the best light.

Here's a few other quick tips:

1) Google and ye shall find
2) Ask a mentor or someone you trust how to prepare
3)Ask a Job Search/Placement Specialist.
4) If you went to college, call up their Career Office and ask them.
5) Call a librarian and ask for suggestions/help.

Good luck!

Annual reviews can become quite tricky.
~ Never include a negative UNLESS you can strongly turn it into an undeniable positive. eg If I had more projects to work on, my time management would be more efficient. (I know that's not quite what you wrote ... but can you see how it is not demonstrative at all of your achievements and attributes you bring to your employer?)
~ It's not the time to complain about a pesky issue. If you wish to complain about a colleague, schedule to do so separately to your review meeting.

In my company, the eval is to also discuss what direction you want to take in the coming year. I would come up with something that would show them you are important to keep around.

I agree with the others, the eval is not a time to bring up issues not associated with your performance.
