My daughter is one of those readers who is much more likely to read a non-fiction work, especially a memoir, than to delve into fiction. In Read This Next, here is the list of memoirs that the authors consider top-notch in both writing quality and sheer story-telling:

The Liar's Club by Mary Karr (a dysfunctional childhood in poverty-stricken East Texas)

The Naked Civil Servant by Quentin Crisp (life as a defiantly out homosexual when it was still illegal and decidedly uncool)

I Remember by Joe Brainard (growing up normally in Tulsa in the 40's and 50's, and sexual awakening)

The Gastronomical Me by M.F.K. Fischer (a life story told through memorable dishes and culinary adventures)

Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! by Richard Feynman (surprisingly non-dry romp through the life of an eminent physicist)

Speak, Memory: An Autobiography by Vladimir Nabakov (the beautifully written memoirs of one of the finest writers of the 20th century)

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang (the memoir of a family and the story of a country)

An African in Greenland by Tete-Michel Kpomassie (a 16 year old African boy escapes his future by running away to Inuit territory)

Naples '44 by Norm Lewis ( a travel writer's time as an Allied intelligence officer in Italy at the end of WWII)

Out of Africa by Isak Dineson ("I had a farm in Africa....")

Swimming to Cambodia by Spalding Gray (based on a four-hour theatre monologue about Gray's appearance in The Killing Fields.)

Epileptic by David B. (graphic novel of a family's often outlandish quest for a cure)

Do you enjoy autobiographies? Any you would recommend?

A good list...

"Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt is also one that comes to mind.

Reading "Flight of Passage" by Rinker Buck, currently.
..if you like Huckleberry Finn...you will love this book.
