I have not read nearly as much as I would have like to this past year. I've only read four books for pleasure, all year.

How about you? Have you done a lot of reading this year? What were the highlights from your 2010 reading experience?

Lori, about 5 or 6 years ago I realized that one of the things I was going to be most perturbed about when I died was the number of books left unread! LOL! At that point I promised myself to never read less than 100 books a year. I won't know for sure until Dec. 31, but right now my total for the year stands at 113. (Down from last year's 124 )

The best books I read this year were the second two books in Steig Larsson's Millenium trilogy, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest; Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy; The Graveyard Book, Tinkers,
My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me, Finishing the Hat, Beatrice and Virgil - just off the top of my head.

Interesting thread. I'm not sure I could give you an exact number, if you're just including books. Of course, I've read innumerable magazines, newsletters, newspapers, and ehamony articles and threads. This year, though, I got away from reading books so much for several months. Some of that was an insane work schedule, combined with family responsiblities. I did finish the year strong, though.

Oh, do "books" of the Bible count? Because, I've read most of the way through this year, out of those 66 books. That would put me close to 100. Otherwise, I'd have to guess I've read about 25 or 30 books, which is a bit below normal for me. They run the gamut from Christian apologetics (The Privileged Planet) to self help books like "Common Mistakes Singles Make." I've also read one world history, and one "History of Western Civ." I went through a stretch where I read biographies, like "Those Who Love" about John and Abigail Adams. Right now, I'm reading a collection of Louis L'Amour western short stories, with a Jack Higgins thriller on deck. So... I guess you could say my reading is "eclectic", like some people claim their music tastes are.

Well, this sounds way too much like bragging, so I'll stop. As far as a number, probably about 30. I'll have to do better next year.

No idea - a fair amount. 1-2 a week since school started for just-fun reading, so that's 16-32, summer reading of maybe 20? And I can't remember what I read in the spring...it was less than a book to a book a week. 75-ish for the year seems reasonable.

My favorites were Chipmunk Seeks Squirrel, Packaging Girlhood, How Pleasure Works, Freedom (Franzen), the Larsson books DDR mentioned.

I only know the exact number because I keep a journal of what I've read and my thoughts, with a list of suggestions, wishes, etc.

I think it also depends on what kind of books you are reading, and not just how many. What I mean is, if you are reading "The Little Engine That Could" (Or whatever the going Kids' book is today), that obviously shouldn't count the same as reading "War and Peace" for instance, unless you are under the age of 8, or are reading it to someone who is. Some books are longer than others, and some are just denser, and take longer to read, because they require a more active reading.

I wouldn't assign the same weight to reading 100 paperback romances, or paperback thrillers, for instance, as I would to 100 heavier tomes.

So, I don't think it's just how many books you've read, as it is how many and what kind. Just my opinion.

Oh, darn, guess I'll have to deduct the alphabet series...lesse 75 - 26...just kidding.

I did read the book "If everybody did" (one of my favorite books growing up) this year - a discussion on Kant for a business ethics course made me want to read it again. I recommended it to the class; it's a good lesson for grown-ups, too.

Not necessary. I'm sure they're all worthy. I was just trying to point out that it's not all about the numbers. Reading difficulty and quality matter too.
