When you read for pleasure (i.e. on your own time and of your own volition - not for work-related things), what is your goal?

Do you want to learn? Be inspired? Be entertained? Escape?

~~~
Me, I read for entertainment / escape, so I almost always read novels.
~~~

How about you?

I read for inspiration, enlightenment, to relate and identify, and for enjoyment. I feel lost and naked when I don't have a book on me. Just finished reading the Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeanette Walls. Loved it.

To be entertained and escape. I love to flex my imagination and visualize what the author is trying to describe.

Good question, Lori.

I read because my mind just seems to crave it. I read all different kinds of things, depending on my mood. I will read books like "Letters from Vietnam," novels, magazines, serious articles, funny articles, the comics, even EHA. I will read the Sunday newspaper from front to back.

Quite often, I will have something I am reading even while watching TV. There are times I have to just put down whatever it is so I can focus on the program I am watching. Lol.

Reading is mostly a form of relaxation for me. I like fiction and autobiographies best.

It is also entertainment. I can become very bored, very easily, as I don't watch a lot of telly. I can pick up a book and be absorbed for a few hours and then go and do something else. Like the weed the rose gardens!

Entertainment, mostly. My favorite novels are fantasy and science fiction, and to me, the best of these are the ones that leave my heart pounding from suspense. Equally good are the ones that have me laughing out loud, though... The very best have some of both!

When I'm not reading for entertainment, I'm reading for information. I love to read magazines that focus on politics, sociology, and psychology. I'm fascinated to read about people, and why/how we are as we are.

As with most everyone else, entertainment and relaxation. Oh, yeah...escape, too. Occasionally for information, but mostly do that on the internet.

Believe it or not I mostly enjoy books of animal stories. I have a really bad habit of reading right before I go to sleep but I get so engrossed in my book I stay up WAY too late!

I read for relaxation, escape, entertainment, and to be informed. I mostly read novel--everything from syspense to romance to mystery, etc. There is actually very little that I won't read.

I travel for work almost daily. I always have at least one book in the car and/or my purse in case I get stuck somewhere waiting. I read while I'm eating my lunch, too. And, like newbie, I read while I'm doing other things.

Gosh, Lori, what a great question!

I can't imagine not reading. . . .

My appetite for reading is voracious and I read for pleasure, the wonderful feeling it gives me, learning, exploration, fun, humor, laughter, suspense, intrigue, mystery, geo-political intrigue, encouragement, enrichment, to help others from something I've read, entertainment, interest in others, intellectual stimulation and thought, inspiration, wisdom, for richness of thought, to sometimes escape, to fantasize what it might have been like to have been that person and what I might have done differently, to debate, to consider other viewpoints, to study, to go into any world anywhere in any time, to fill bits of time such as standing in line at the grocery store, to avoid boredom, for creativity, as an outlet for all kinds of things, to honor and worship God when reading the Bible, when in a pensive mood, to cry, to share, to read aloud to others, to be an imaginary character especially when reading aloud to children, to help others learn to read, to be a role model to others for reading, to relax, to unwind, to help myself fall asleep (if it's not a page turner say), because it's enjoyable and interesting, and for pure, unadulterated enjoyment and overwhelming joy!

Why would one not read?
