Is anyone else here a member of their local and/or State library and actually use its services?

My friend H talked me into joining my local library late last year. And I do mean he had to talk me into it, I was thoroughly convinced that they would not have anything there which I would want to read.

I was partially right. The authors I do prefer to read, I own all those books already. But I have done something I haven't done in around five years: started reading books by previously unknown authors and found I liked their writing.

I would never have bought a book by a previously untested author ... in case I didn't like the story or writing.

Oh Meri I love libraries. Have been an active user all my life. I get most of my reading at the local library.

About 1/2 the books I check out are authors I already know and like, or they're famous classics. The other 1/2 are people I never heard of, but somehow their book leaped out at me ... I read the first paragraph or a random paragraph somewhere and make a quick yes/no.

I love finding new authors that way. Most recent find: Andrea Barrett. Possibly one of my favorites ever.

I am happy to see libraries remain full and busy these days! And not just people using the computers! lol.

Ah, so glad I am not the only one! LOL!

One thing the library does have (which I totally forgot about) are all those reference books and authors that I have wanted to read, but are no longer in print.

I love libraries! And where I live now has incredible libraries with endless books, although I'm delving into University texts and research. At some point I'll run out of those and I'll go back to fiction.
Now where I used to live I could walk to a library that was in the coolest Victorian building with a cat that lived there. Big over-sized stuffed chairs in quiet nooks. Marble tiled floors that showed wear from the years of service. Fabulous!

I'm a lifelong library lover and user - I worked in one for a time, and would love to again someday.

I have a reciprocal card so I can use all the surrounding area libraries, have access to a university library, and make heavy use of interlibrary loan.

I read mostly non-fiction these days, but when I do read fiction, if it's something I don't already own, I either borrow from the library, or sometimes buy at the library used book sale.

Besides books and magazines, I also check out books on tape (non-fiction) and music that I can listen to at work, and borrow movies there, as well, instead of renting.

I find that a lot of people I've talked to aren't even aware of all the services libraries provide - or the extent of them - and it's really too bad. They are one of our most valuable, but under-valued and under-used resources.

I love libraries!

I have to admit, the online "card catalog" makes life SO much easier when you're trying to find something specific, but you can still browse and find something new.

I miss the old card catalogs becuse I could thumb thrue the card then when I found some thing interestin I could go to the stacks and find it. I also like the old mgizines like 100years +/- and microfilm sections for old news papers.

I am a big fan of the library! I had not been inside a library in years, since I graduated from college.

My library has a website for downloadable audiobooks that you can "check out" just like with any other thing from the library, and then they can be either burned to CD or transferred right to my iPOD. LOVE LOVE LOVE that!

I also check out lots of CDs (again, for said iPOD) and even DVDs. Movies, TV shows (great for watching on the treadmill). Some people like Netflix for movies/TV shows, but they are all completely FREE from the library!
