Once when i was a kid i got my hands on a book called Shogun by the late James Clavell. From page one, i couldnt put it down. Sleep, eat, move, everywhere! i had to have the book in my hands!! With me still reading, my mom would raise mayhem but i just couldnt put the book down. I'd gladly take it with the book in hand. I'd go to school with it. A week and a thousand pages later, with a deep understanding of japanese language and culture mixed with english barbarism (pardon the pun), the book ended and i finally put it down.

Have you ever read a book that you absolutely could not put down?

Shogun Qoute (off wikipedia): ""It's a saying they have, that a man has a false heart in his mouth for the world to see, another in his breast to show to his special friends and his family, and the real one, the true one, the secret one, which is never known to anyone except to himself alone, hidden only God knows where."

Well....I'm reading a book right now that I can't put down.

The title of the book is "Weird History 101...and Other Tales of Intrigue, Mayhem, and Outrageous Behavior" by John Richard Stephens.

The book has first-hand accounts of history and historical figures. For instance, there are excerpts titled "My Dinner with Atilla the Hun"..."Watching Custer's Last Stand"...and "Duels Between Women".

I am an avid historical non-fiction reader, so all of my books are in 'can't put down' status..but this book is one of the best historical books I've read yet!

(Yes...I know when I rave about a book I'm reading most folks eyes cross and they wanna fall out in a dead sleep...but it is what it is!)

BTW: Lately I have become interested in Politics as a genre...next books on my list:

"Obama's Wars" by Bob Woodward

"Decision Points" by George W. Bush

"Pinheads and Patriots:Where You Stand in the Age of Obama" by Bill O'Reilly

...and I'm still finishing up "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot

So much reading...so little time!

Boy's Life by Robert R McCammon. Hilarious, imaginative, fast paced and really great to pass on to the next person

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

I read it while working at a summer camp. Any free time I had I was reading. It was such a well written book, you get sucked in and it has everything anyone could ever want in a book. There is death, birth, love, betrayal, war, good vs evil, etc.

I did read the book you read, and it is very engrossing. I have 2 oldies, that I have read and reread several times. 1. Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell 2. The Crossbreed by Allen W. Eckert
This is an animal story, but it brought me to tears. I hope someone else read this because then they'd know why I cried.

Suzie PS, The other one is better than the movie.

I read Jack London's The Call of the Wild last weekend. Loved it, very compelling and happily quite short ~ I'm a slow reader.

I felt the same about A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. I lived inside that world for a while. Strangely fixiated by it. Loved it too.

And finally Paul Scott's Staying On about an elderly British couple who stay on in India after the Raj has collapsed and it's a beautiful depiction of their lives and memories and mutual disappointments and love. It moves me to tears every time I read it.

I read Shogun too and saw the movie, I had the feeling that they were telling two diferent stories. I have read so many books tht I just coud not wate to get back to and a few that I threw across the room then go and pick it up because i coul not stand not knowing what happened next.
