I have a book filled with Edgar Allan Poe stories. I am enjoying it thoroughly.

So tell me, which is your favourite Edgar Allan Poe story and why?

I liked the "Cask of Amantillo"... I may have spelled that wrong. It has been awhile since I have read it. I liked the whole luring of the greedy merchant and found the idea of being sealed up behind a wall of bricks in an old alcove terrifying. Great short story.

I liked his poems also. In particular "Annabelle Lee"... a poem about his wife who I believe as a distant cousin that died very young....

A side note that I thought was interesting is that when they presented the circumstances of his death to students in a medical school without saying who he was, they diagnosis was not a drug overdose, but rather, death from rabies... all of his symptoms mirrored that rather than drug withdrawal.

I did not know this, how fascinating!

I have to read Poe for my class this month. I don't have a favorite story though I enjoy his sonnets, and I did like "Annabelle Lee. I have to say that I didn't like "The Black Cat" though, too macabre.

It's a shame he died so young (at age 40). He was engaged to another woman at the time of his death. He was found unconscious on the street and died four days later.

I don't know Poe, but I just read The Black Cat. The eye gouging bit caused the same reaction in me as the ear cutting torture scene in Reservoir Dogs.

Is there another way with Poe?

"DURING the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country ; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher"....
