So how do you like your books? Are you still a printed word kind of reader or have you migrated to one of the electronic versions of a book, such as the kindle? Do you listen to audiobooks in the car or on your ipod?

As for myself, I listen to audio CD's from the library and a new thing called the Playaway. The Playaway is a small MP3 player with just one book on it that you can use while exercising. I like both of those options and occasionally download one from itunes for the ipod.

I haven't tried the kindle but it looks interesting and great for travel but until they come down in price I don't think I will be getting one. Another consideration for me is that I get a lot of my books from the library and only buy the "Keepers" so it would be expensive to keep my kindle filled and me happy.

I heard of one school in the northeast that got rid of all their books and have gone totally electronic.

How do you feel about all these "new-fangled" gadgets and how do you use them?

I like my books with real pages that I turn.

If it's really nice, particularly striking.....I want to be able to read it several times.....before going on to the next passage. I want to savor it.....that special gift from the author to me.

I also like being able to put a bookmark in there. I like seeing books, either standing on end on a shelf, or laying down flat on a table. I don't want to see them encased in plastic; I don't want to be in so much of a hurry.....that I can't turn a page.

There is some use and merit to the electronic storage media, I think. But in general, for around the house, paper books have pride of place. Books have presence, weight, and actually *seeing* that book in its physical binding is something I'd like to keep in my life. I like to keep lots of books in my house, good books that are good reads. It reminds me a bit of libraries, which are extraordinarily peaceful to me.

The kindle is nice because it has a screen that will not burn your eyes. Computer screens emit light in the blue spectrum, which is harmful to the eyes over time. The grayscale screen is much more forgiving. For travel purposes, perhaps a generation or three forward, a paperback- or hardback sized kindle with a flash drive full of books would be ideal for me.

I usually have several books that I am interested in at one time, and I read voraciously. If I am studying, or worse, researching, then having the books I'd like to have on a trip would mean carrying a duffel bag nearly as big as me! Electronic media would save weight. (note- when I go on trips I *am* doing other things than reading, honest!).

The audio books phenomena is one I haven't explored much, but one I am interested in for those long driving trips. I could get more readong done then! It seems to me that this would be a good thing. We shall see.

In those specific circumstances, non-paper books would be useful. But I'm not going to be gutting my personal library- not ever, that I can see. My books are like old friends by now. Make new friends- but keep the old. *grin*

You forced me to admit to it!

Audio books do serve a purpose on the All American Road Trip!

I heard the whole Harry Potter that way! Day after day after day.....

My husband liked Louis L'Amour. I indulged him.

Now that it's just me, though, I go with the music.

Can't do it Yoga-gal. I have this horrible habit that ticks sister off of needing to write commentary on the pages of my books. If these e-books allowed to write notes and keep the notes there then I would try it. However, I don't think they do.

You can on the Kindle- but not the Sony reader, last I checked. You can also export the notes with page citations to your computer.

Or you can just do like I've been doing since DOS 3.0- keep a word doc. with citation references and bibliography. I've also got stacks of notebooks I still go back to on occasion, that I keep reminding myself I need to enter as a word document, but the books keep nagging at me to read them... *grin*

It's part of my profession to know a bit about this...

Playaways are very popular where I work. We can't keep them on the shelf.

The issue with going electronic is that when we use an electronic reader we are not totally focused. There is too much happening and we are not immersed in the story as we would be with a print book.

There has been much discussion regarding the school library that went electronic. One wonders what will happen if the school were to lose electricity. In addition, schools are supposed to teach to diverse learners, and there is no differentiation in offering one means of accessing information and literature.

That being said, e-books are very cool and great for voracious readers. It would be lovely to go on vacation with 10 books in one streamlined e-book.

It would be lovely just to go on vacation! :-)

Well, I must be an utter dag! I have never even heard of kindle. At first, I thought you'd written kirtle and I no idea what kirtle was doing in with a reading topic!

I love books. I love the smell of the paper and ink and the whole new book experience. I like the shiny texture of the cover and the coarser texture of the paper.

My iPod is strictly used to house my chair-dancing music!

Not true.

For the price of a Kindle, I can buy a lot of used paperbacks, which I would actually own and could resell or trade when finished. You don't really own the books you "buy" on a Kindle.

I'm sure it's a fun device to play with, though. Too bad you can't sample one in a store before buying it.
