This is the time of the year when I tend to want to curl up under a blanket with a good book, something warm to drink, and a great book and just read for a few hours. So I came here to see what everyone was reading these days, and I saw that the last thread posted along these lines was over the summer.

My family did Christmas early this year, and I did receive a few books as gifts, so I plan to start reading them right away. What are you reading/planning to read once Christmas is over?

My first one is going to be the last novel by Michael Crichton that was just recently released. It's called Pirate Latitudes.

I agree Bea. Lately all I have wanted to do is curl up in my pjs and read.

I am reading The Piano Teacher by Janice Lee for my book club. It is set in Hong Kong during WWII and so far is really good.

I tend to read several books at once so I am also reading Wicked - The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Mcguire. The musical is based on this book. It is very different from what I usually read but so far so good.

In the background I have Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It is not my favorite book this year but I hope to finish it,

On audiobook I am finishing U is for Undertow by Sue Grafton and hope to start The BlindSide - The Evolution of the Game (the Sandra Bullock movie is based on this book) and can't wait to compare it to the movie.

Steel Inferno: The 1st SS Panzer Corps in Normandy by M. Reynolds and The Murderer Next Door : Why the mind is designed to kill by David Buss

Not exactly light reading but interesting.

I also have Love in the Time of Cholera. I haven't started reading it yet, though. I'm also finishing a book that's been really popular with our students (many of who heard the author speak a few weeks ago), and it's called 13 Reasons Why. I want to make sure I finish it by the time break is over so they can have it, but I wanted to read it so I'm up on what's popular with them, especially since this one deals with teen suicide.

I'll have to agree with you: Neither sounds like light reading, but I will admit they sound interesting--especially the second one.

I'm just finishing up a historical fiction novel called Hagar by Lois Henderson. I love the way she brings the biblical account of Abram, Sarai, and Hagar ro life. Next, I'm going for a political thriller called The Election by Jerome Teel. After that, Ill likely want to get into some fantacy or Science Fiction. Any suggestions anyone?.

I love to read and do so almost everynight before bed. My latest read is the new Dan Brown novel, "The Lost Symbol". I too read several books at once so I am continuing to read, "How to Heal Your Life". I also have a series of books that my daughter suggested I read the latest, "Atlantis Prophecy". I plan on reading, "Pirate Latitudes" soon. Michael Crichton was a favorite author. I think I have read everybook he has written since, "Jurassic Park" and a few of his older novels.
I hope this thread continues for awhile, what a great way to hear of new books (or old ones).

Currently I'm reading Dan Brown's "Lost Symbol" (which is sad seeing as how I picked it up the day it came out and I'm still not done). I'm also listen to a novel called "Pandora Star" by Peter F. Hamilton that I downloaded from Audible.com. I have some many books and audio books that I've bought/downloaded on tap that I don't think I'll be able to finish them any time soon at the rates I'm currently reading/listening at. I'm been trying to do more reading recently though.

Also, it's good to see some fellow Crichton fans in here. Pirate Latitudes is on my (ever expanding) to read list.

"Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S Beagle Round the World" by Charles Darwin (lol - no wonder it was shortened to 'Voyage of the Beagle'!)

It is interesting. He writes quite descriptively and it is easy to picture some of the things he describes. I was very surprised to see (it is a first edition copy) how closely the english he uses resembles modern english in use today. I had thought it would be an older style english.
