I just read an article about the best selling books in 64 of the US major airports...a place where truly desperate travelers buy books to wait for that late plane, cancelled flight or long distance traveling.

Heres the list of the 2009 fiction winners

Might be. I am in another book club and as long as we wouldn't try to read the whole book in less than a month I would give it a whirl.

I have read The Help by Kathryn Stockett (she is from my town) and the book is excellent. Highly recommend.

I have heard from the lady that leads our book club (she chooses all our books and has great taste) that Lark and Termite is fabulous as well as The Year of the Flood. The others I have not heard of.

No offense Roxy, but lists like this always depress me. I've been working on a book for a while, the book is aimed towards men but unfortunately the biggest market for readers are women. So, I know my book will never get published. In my mind at least it is a classic! It is the contemporary American novel!

Now now-don't generalize. Women readers DO read more than romance genre books.

Personally I like Lee Childs, Dan Brown, Dave Barry and other male oriented strong male protagonist books. Lots of women do. I'm in several book clubs and 2 of them are almost all men (and yes-I do go there to meet men as well as get good reads).
Those 2 groups tend to read action books- WEB Griffin, Tom Clancy - stuff with rogue CIA assassins saving the dumb liberal USA from themselves.
I enjoy a well written, well plotted book whose basic premise is quite different from my own political leaning. If its entertaining and well written, I'm all over it!

So keep writing-but put in just a touch of woman-perhaps a strong woman partner for your male protagonist?

Thanks Roxy for taking that comment in the spirit in which it was intended. It's uplifting to hear the more men are reading. I got the idea that the majority of readers were women because I attended a seminar regarding getting published for young writers. Out of the panel of ten authors and publishers all of them were conclusive that the vast majority of readership was from women. Not necessarily Romance novels but even the heavier reading was read primarily by women. So, they advised us that when we wrote we should keep that in mind. On Facebook I posted a story and an author actually replied and told me something to the effect of, "your writing is passable at best but you really need to read more feminine oriented material." She even offered suggestions but I have to go back and check them out. Maybe what she meant is I have to get more in touch with my emotional side. But again, no offense and thanks for taking it lightly. I did not mean that women read Romance novels just that in general there is more of a readership amongst women.

Message in a Bottle-and the authors name escapes me right now, but he's written a number of good but sensitive novels might be someone for you to read.

I'm sure I'll wake up @ 3am shouting his name and scaring all the animals off my bed.

Hey Roxy:

I've waited to get back to you on this issue regarding my book because I've been going back and forth with a female friend of mine. Ok, so instead of trying to reinvent the wheel by reading books written towards more of a female audience I have enlisted the aid of a very well-adjusted female! I just received an e-mail from her indicating that she would in fact work with my book and assist me in getting in published! She writes for the local paper, has credential, and really likes what I have written. I think this books just might get published!

The last Margaret Atwood book I read was Oryx and Crake - loved it. The rest of the list I don't recognize but I'm mainly into paranormal romance.
