Anybody giving any books as Christmas presents?

Any you want Santa to put in your stocking?

I know I will probably be giving some but haven't finalized my list yet?

Any suggestions?

Yes, I really enjoy giving and receiving books as gifts.

I'm happy with any cookbook I don't already have and would also be happy to see novels by Kerry Greenwood, Patricia Cornwall and P.D James.

I'm giving my Dad: True Colours by Adam Gilchrist and will probably give my sister a cookbook for Diabetic Desserts.

No suggestions.

But I will tell you about books I really appreciated receiving as Christmas presents. As a kid, I bought books with my allowance. I was always a reader!

One year, my parents gave me some of the Classics. I was about 10-12 or so. There was a bookcase, and all these books. Jane Eyre, Last of the Mohicans, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, Black Beauty.....and more. I was thrilled.

When I was in college, I took Shakespeare. They gave me the complete works. Leather bound, ribbon markers, golden edges. I read them all, Tragedies, Histories, Comedies, Sonnets, everything. I think I had the best books in class that year.

You can't go wrong with a good book.

I'm not much of a novel reader but, since I had mentioned the book after it was recommended to me by someone at work, last year for Christmas my parents gave me the book "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. I just finished it (hey it is a long book!!) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the best books I've read. It was actually considered one of the most most influential book to readers back in some1991 report by the Library of Congress...only the Bible was ahead of it. I think it's influential because it's a celebration of the human mind. At least that is how I would summarize it.

Anyway, if you know someone who would enjoy a challenging, philosophical and enjoyable read, Atlas Shrugged is one I'd recommend.

I first read that book well over 30 years ago. I have never forgotten it.

Especially given the things happening in our country today. But that's for another whole thread.

Your parents must have been Thinkers, to give you that book. You are fortunate, in that respect.

BOOKS! yay! *bounces up and down*

I get books every year. I give books almost every year. Books are good things. They look good. They smell good. They have wonderful things inside them…
The short, short, chopped and clipped miniscule list (yes I really had *lots* more...)

Books I want:
The Histories, by Herodotus. Talk about a classic!
The Chimerium Gambit by James Daniel Ross. For my sci-fi fix.
Probably another Lawrence Block for my detective fiction
A Brief History of Science, Disease, and Medicine by I forget who. For my curious side.

Books I’d suggest:
Any of Keith Laumer’s Retief stories, collections or novels. Humor and science fiction, with the incompetent machinations of bureaucratic diplomacy, oh my!
It’s a Bitter Little World, by Pappas for those gritty little noir quotes. Not a novel, but worth the price of admission.
Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlett. What Not To Do if you want to keep an economy stable… Easier read than you’d expect.
And lastly, any collection of short stories in your favorite area. Bite sized fun!
Go read happy!

p.s. I keep a book in my lap to read while the pages load. I am such a readaholic… *grin*

Books can be risky at times, especially when they give you a broad topic such as outdoor books. I happen to be a big fan of Matthew Paul Turner. Currently reading How Starbucks Saved My Life and it is a quick read. The book would fit perfectly in a stocking!
