I don't buy many books hot off the printers press in hardbound, but since the 3rd book in this series..about 15 years ago I think, I have just gone for it.

The series premise is great fun: It's just post WW11 and a British woman has reunited with her soldier husband after 7 years of being apart. She was a field nurse in Europe thus has some medical training.

She's wandering the hills in Scotland on a 2nd honeymoon when...poof...she goes back in time 200 years after passing thru old standing stones.

Enough of a spoiler if you haven't read the series.

These books are huge-600 pages-and I try not to fly thru them. However Ms Gabaldon is a fantastic descriptive writer who researches each book for years. It's hard to put them down.

There is even a companion book to the first 5 or so books, because the cast of characters is huge.

Websites about the series are all over and groupies keep Ms Gabaldon busy with ideas about who should play the protagonists if there is ever a movie..but since there are so many things going on in the books, it would have to be a multi season TV mini-series to do it justice and that isn't going to happen in this era of reality shows.

If you're looking for a good bunch of books to curl up with this winter, paperbacks are found at many used book stores and Amazon. Since the books are so involved, I like to re-read the series in the year prior to a new one coming out..I am also sort of a speed reader but also I just forget about things that have happened to whoever.

Her books are amazing! Actually managed to get a copy of her latest, just prior to the release date - heaven! Loved it!

I agree, her writing is just so well researched, and deals with a period in history that I enjoy learning about. She spins a marvelous tale, and I am just sorry that it will probably be another 3 years until she does it again!

I also agree that you can re read her books, and enjoy them thoroughly every time!

You are so right! I stumbled on the first of these in a used book store and fell completely in love.

I get completely lost in each one and have a hard time laying them down.

Re-reading is a big help when it's so long between books and, as a bonus, they are enjoyable every time! I tend to read very quickly, too, and I always find that there are things that I've missed (or maybe just forgotten.)

Can't wait to read the latest!
