I just remembered a series of books by Jim Butcher called The Dresden Files. It was also a TV show for a bit on SciFi (I REFUSE to call it by it's new name!)

Check out the Young Adult section at your public library. There's been terrific sci-fi and fantasy for that genre. Try Unwind, by Neil Shusterman, or the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld.
Someone mentioned Neil Gaiman and I second that. The Graveyard Book was last year's Newbery winner.

Also YA books by Nancy Farmer (House of the Scorpion and many others)

Philip Jose Farmer wrote the Riverworld series (would be found in adult sci-fi). No idea if the authors are related. I've checked and haven't seen anything.

Lately I have been reading just about everything Games Workshop's Black Library has to offer.

As far as the Warhammer Fantasy setting has to offer I recently finished Heldenhammer: The Legend of Sigmar (1st novel in their new Times of Legends series) by Graham McNeil and I've also started reading the Chronicles of Malus Darkblade (just finished the 1st book int hat series as well) by Dan Abnett & Mike Lee.

The latter is the Warhammer take on Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melniboné series (which is also a great series, especially if you're not a fan of the Tolkien or Robert E. Howard type of sword & sorcery) . However in comparison, Malus is way more evil than Elric, mainly because while like Elric he's equally dependent on his dæmonic possession, he is way more conscious in regards to the less than moral acts he commits to get his way.

I'm also a big fan of BL's Gotrek & Felix series. It's about the travels of human Felix who drunkenly swore an oath to record the great death saga of dwarf slayer (a type of warrior cult) Gotrek. Trouble is the more death Gotrek seeks in combat, the stronger he gets and the harder he becomes to kill leaving Felix to believe whatever finally does kill Gotrek will make short work of him and make the saga rather hard to complete as a result.

The "Alivin the maker" series by Orson scott Card is a good fantasy/historical fiction series. As is the Ender's game series.

You've got some authors there I like (David Edding's, Kristen Britan) so you might like some of these:

Song in the silence by Elizabeth Kerner

Windrose chronicle by Barabara Hambly

Last dragon Lord - Joanne Bertin

Name of the Winds by Patrick Rothfuss

Through wolf's eyes by Jane Linskold

Hope that's of some help/interest :0)

There are a bunch of great suggestions here (Pratchett, Gaiman, Shinn, Hamilton, LeGuin, Atwood, Card, Hambley) but I can't believe that no one has suggested Lois McMaster Bujold yet!
"The Curse of Chalion" is just an amazing book and an award winner. (the two sequels in this universe are also good, but not as stunningly great as "Curse") I also cannot recommend her "Vorkosigan" novels highly enough. They may look like hard SF but they are character driven. Both series are also great because they are novels you can read alone, but each one adds to the universe. "Shards of Honour" or "The Warrior's Apprentice" are good entry points.
Her lastest series didn't grab me, but they are the first of hers that haven't.
(she's also tied now with Heinlein for the most Hugo or Nebula awards ever)

You should try the Death Gate Cycle from Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis. Probably my 2nd favorite series behind Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series.

Some people mentioned Piers Anthony's Xanth books, but he also wrote a series call the Apprentice Adept seires. First book was entitled Split Infinity. Very good series, and is a mix of Science Fiction and Fantasy (two different worlds).

Hope you try them and like them as much as I did.
