Are there any fantasy readers out there? I am in need of some suggestions. I have run out of stuff to read and the last few books I picked up have not been very good. Below are a few authors that I have already read and enjoyed just to give you an idea of what I like.
[*]David Eddings[*]Robert Jordan (Anyone know if someone is going to finish the series for the late Mr. Jordan?)[*]Jim Butcher (Have not yet read the Dresden books..just his fanasty novels)[*]Terry Goodkind[*]Kristen Britain[*]George R. Martin[/list]

I am not a big Sci-Fi reader (way too technical for me). I did enjoy Weber's Honor Harrington series and would not mind any Sci-Fi series suggestions if they have some likeablecharacters in them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you are into fantasy, then I would recommend reading the series from the authors mentioned above.

Thanks!
Eliabeth Moon is a good wrighter. she has severial books out there including the Harris Sranno serious. Her back groundis the same as David webber, USMC.

The best fantasy authors that I really enjoy are: (I read lots of fantasy novels/series)

David Gemmel - Just about anything he wrote I enjoyed.

Stephen Donaldson - Thomas Covenant Series (Both)

Terry Brooks - His Sword of Shannara and Elfstones of Shannara were really good

Glenn Cook - Garrett P.I. Series

Barbara Hambly - Sun Wolf Series

Dave Duncan - The Seventh Sword Series

These are the authors that I look for when I go to the bookstore. Hope this helps.

My favorite fantasy novel is Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, by Susanna Clarke. The best. It's written as an alternate, magical history of England. It's a blend of historical-fictionand fantasy, written in the style of a period novel in Georgian/Regency England. My explanation really doesn't do it justice, just read it and see for yourself!

I know it has been awhile since the last post but No one metioned Roger Zalazny's Prince for Amber books. What a ride. Just when you have it all figured out there is a new twist.

Books! Yay for good books! I’ve picked up some good suggestions here for future enjoyment. Here’s a tiny little piece of my library.

Gobble-them-up-they’re-so-good-books:

David Drake’s Lt. Leary series: begins at "With The Lightnenings." Sci-fi, but so much fun anybody would love it, imho.
Glen Cook’s Garret P.I. series: begins with "Sweet Silver Blues." First one is the best, but all are fun, somewhat Chandler-esque goodness.
Stan Nichols’ Orcs series: "Orcs" is a compilation of the first few short stories that comprise a neat story arc.
Patrick Rothfuss’ "Name of the Wind" -if I could spin tales half so well, I’d still be a pauper for I’d share them with all for free.
John Scalzi’s "Old Man’s War" was sci-fi, but quite fun. Lost in it for hours…
Ian Douglas’s Star Marines: starts with "Semper Mars" again, sci-fi, but good exciting stories.
If you liked Honor Harrington, did you know it was based on Horatio Hornblower? Might want to look that up later on.

More goodnes:

Steven Erikson is he11 with a pen. Amazing writing, complex, detailed, a living screaming world right in front of you. I second the Malazan Book of the Fallen series.
Brandon Sanderson’s "Elantris" was a tight, good, character driven story.
Matthew Stover’s "Heroes Die" was bloody and violent but good, very good.
Scott Lynch’s "Lies of Locke Lamora" is darned hard to put down. Check the cover for hidden superglue.
David Gemmel’s "Against the Horde" (I have an ancient, much battered copy)- anything by Gemmel is sweet. Mostly older heroes dealing with age, a changing world, and upstart young pup heroes- but goodness nonetheless.
Sherwood Smith’s "Inda" you might enjoy if you liked Jordan’s work. A broad, complex plot with intriguing characters and an interesting male/female dichotomy.
Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series: starts with "His Majesty’s Dragon" is good stuff- Lt. Leary with Dragons you might say.

Talonfinite I think the book you are referring to might be Jennifer Roberson’s Sword Dancer trilogy. Neat gender play and lots of sword swinging fun. Hope you all find something good to read today!

For years all I read was DragonLance. Great books if you start from the beginning with the Weiss and Hickman first generation books, then they, at least to me, seem to taper off to mediocre. More recently I became obsessed with dark elves. I read the RA Salvatore "Drizzt" books which were great but I wanted to know more about dark elves. Since I'm a perspiring writer and having taken dark elves as a theme for a collection of short stories and wanted to gain a different perspective than in the RA Salvatore books. I found the Starlight and Shadows trilogy by Elaine Cunningham to be fantastic while also satisfying my research needs. I'd recommend that trilogy because I found them hard to put down. Right now I'm going through the War of the Spider Queen books again by RA Salvatore. Dark elves are wonderful because they are full of chaos and deception, intrigue and hate, rules but no rules. Anything goes!
