I have a bit of an addiction to books, fantasy/sci-fi in particular ...

For Robert Jordan ... Yes, he voice recorded the book and his wife, publisher and good firiend/fan are finishing up the book ... It is to be released in September of 2009.

As far as other authors go ... Orson Scott Card is very prolific when it comes to writing, and so far the dozen or so I have read have been great. Eric Flint, David Drake, David Weber and John Ringo are fun to read. Mel Odom, Jacqueline Carrey (I think that is how her name is spelled), Terry Brooks, and Tanya Huff (it is sci-fi but if one replaced the guns with arrows, the plot wouldn't change any) are fun to read.

Best author I have read so far is Steven Erickson and his Malazan Book of the Fallen series ... He'd amkes Aes Seadai look like amatuers and Jordan look like a single plot-line author.

I will check my library when I get home for a few others.

Really more comedy fantasy. but if you haven't already, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams are a must. For straight fantasy, Stephen Donalson and Julian May are a good start. Frank Herbert's Dune is a personal favourite.

It's a kids book but Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials is pretty awesome.

It mightn't be for you, but I recommed anything by Neil Stephenson to everyone. i also second the Neil Gaiman suggestion. He also co-wrote with Pratchett.

Try Piers Anthony or the Dragonlance Series (the original with Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman), Terry Brooks and there was another trilogy where the woman sang to the sword from the north and travelled with a barbarian...can't though remember the author.

I concur with the others -- my favourite sci-fi authors are:

** Piers Anthony

** David Eddings

** Stephen Donaldson - he is a brilliant (albeit very dark) author

** Julian May

** Ann McCaffrey

** Robert Heinlein

** Isaac Asimov

** Traci Harding -- she is a great Aussie writer, pretty new on the scene

** Ian Irvine

** Robin Hobb

** Sara Douglass

I have read at least one series, but usually more of each of the above authors....

Are there any fantasy readers out there? I am in need of some suggestions. I have run out of stuff to read and the last few books I picked up have not been very good. Below are a few authors that I have already read and enjoyed just to give you an idea of what I like.
[*]David Eddings[*]Robert Jordan (Anyone know if someone is going to finish the series for the late Mr. Jordan?)[*]Jim Butcher (Have not yet read the Dresden books..just his fanasty novels)[*]Terry Goodkind[*]Kristen Britain[*]George R. Martin[/list]

I am not a big Sci-Fi reader (way too technical for me). I did enjoy Weber's Honor Harrington series and would not mind any Sci-Fi series suggestions if they have some likeablecharacters in them.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you are into fantasy, then I would recommend reading the series from the authors mentioned above.

Thanks!
I just started reading the Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris. I download it from Ediesel books. HBO just started a series based on the books and I was so intrigued, I started looking for the books. I enjoy Nora Roberts Fantasy books and also you could try Gena Showalter.

Thanks to all who have gonebefore - lots of authors to chase down and read.

One authorwho does notappeared to be listed is Dan Simmons. Have recently revisited his Hyperion Cantos series. Also have read his "Olympos" and the related "Ilium", where sci-fi meets Greek Mythology.

Try Andre Nortons Stories. I love her use of language. If you like Charlene Harris the go find Sherilynn Kenyon but be warned these are adult fantasy. Check out the website Dark-Huntercom.

For a fun, quick but exceptional series, read Stephanie Meyer's Twighlight series. They are meant for YA but I loved them. There are a few pages in the second book that actually gave me goosebumps. Not for what they said but for what they didn't say.
