Surviving a cancer diagnosis really changed my perspective on what was really important to me when it comes to finding someone to spend the rest of my life with. I'm thinking that potential partners will be hesitant to date. Any thoughts?

I am a 5-year (almost!) cancer survivor, not in a relationship. Personally I don't see where my cancer will be an issue. If I were to meet someone special, I wouldn't even bring it up until and unless the relationship became more serious. Yes, I am probably considered high-risk for recurrence. But aren't we all "high-risk" for some life-threatening catastrophe? My cancer is always in the back of my mind but not something I dwell on. For now, it's history.

I have only dated one new person since my survival from stage IV metastatic melanoma (tumor-free since May '08). I found it difficult to determine how and when to incorporate my survival into the conversation. I can't hide it, since my scars are obvious (on my neck and chest), so I have to explain it fairly early in the relationship. In this case, we talked many times before we met. And I didn't disclose the reason for the scars until the second date (though I saw he noticed right away). I wonder when I would talk about it if my scars weren't so obvious. It's a big part of my life now and has changed how I view the world... so it's important to talk about it. I suppose the timing will just depend on the person and my estimate of their comfort level with such a heavy topic.
