As someone who regularly starts the thread, I post it in Dating because it's THE most popular forum. Some people actually have a date on Friday night and post about it, while others come to get away from it all. In any event, it's just a fun place to hang out if you are home and on the boards.
I recognize that and given that it's one thread a week I haven't had an issue with keeping it in Dating -- it's seemed to me that the thread sort of serves as a weekly group chat date of sorts.

However it would be great if once we have the new board structure in place we could, one Friday night, have an official "moving of the thread" kind of post and start posting it in the updated forum.

Might be fun to have a Saturday Night Roll Call thread, too!

I agree.

I've commented on this before, but I think it is best to allow some degree of silly topics and spoof topics in Dating.

It keeps the "oldies" and the "newbies" mixed together.

Problem is, that so many legitimate threads get hijacked into silly/spoof/chit-chat topics by you and others. When this happens, there is no hope of ever getting the thread back on track.

I am encouraged to see the reminders that Lori posted in many of the forums about staying on-topic. I think many of us would greatly appreciate that.

honestly, i don't mind if a thread goes off topic. usually when it does it ends up more interesting than the original topic anyway.

The lack of other available threads is part of the problem.

So, come to think of it, is human nature.

In any case, an OP with a serious, non-inflammatory question is generally not interrupted. My view, from a lot of experience, is that off-topic meanaders are right when they happen. It's always possible to re-post the topic slightly differently.

I've had a few of mine go off-topic. Did I run crying to mommy? I did not.

If we need more "fun" topics about dating, start them! I do from time to time, and they fall tend to fall flat but perhaps it's because I'm the admin -- maybe a Member would have better luck.

I've seen LOTS of legitimate threads (maybe not "serious" to us but certainly to the OP) from newbies with issues get taken off track by a few cutting remarks that were clearly meant to inject humor into the situation, perhaps even for the OP's benefit, but if it's your (general "your") problem, I'd reckon that the humor will fall on deaf ears and you'd feel a bit ridiculed by it.

D_Lion, no one came crying to me, but I couldn't help but notice -- invariably, those folks don't post beyond that initial topic. Ever wonder why? It's my job to wonder, figure it out, and fix it and that in part is why I posted the Stay on Topic threads....I want newbies to feel welcome here so our Community can continue to grow.

So, everyone be nice and follow the rules. Thanks!

Two other observations:

Most OP's don't post beyond one topic (most don't even post again in their one topic), including all the topics that no "regulars" were in at all.

The people who stick around tend to react well and engage with their own humor.

Lori you are too funny! I like to see the OP come back and support their threads and answer questions that invariably come up. I've noticed that when that doesn't happen, it seems that the threads die quickly or stray off topic. Not sure if there is a solution to that problem.

I would distinguish between threads that go off topic because it's a natural progression of the discussion, versus threads that are "thrown" off topic when someone comes in (or several people do) and essentially hijacks it. It's the latter that is really a problem here. Brief digressions are fine -- that's part of the natural ebb and flow of discussion -- but it's not okay to come in and force a thread off-topic (which as often as not just seems to be a "Look what I can do!" sort of attention-getting ploy ).
