My son was born with cleft lip/palate. He has had many other problems and at one time was seeing 9 specialists at the same time. When he was 18 mos. old he was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue which is allergies to wheat, barley, rye, oats and pretty much anything not gluten free. It costs me about $600 a month for just his food and I cannot work due to his disabilities and cannot get disability to approve him because there are too many unrelated problems. They told me that hehas to have one major problem that causes a bunch of little problems, crazy! He was also just recently diagnosed with possible autism. He just turned 2 years old on June 2 and screams most of the day. He still does not say anything and that could be why he is screaming and may not be autistic, they cannot fully diagnose him until he is 2 1/2. He gets therapy for autism 3 times a week and speech therapy twice a week. Thank God I have raised 2 other children and have a lot of patience now or I think I would go crazy. My other two children are 18 and 20 but neither of them have lived with my 2 year old and one lives in Florida so I do not get much help. Anyway, just wanted to explain my situation so you would know why I accepted this group and need it. I am came to California from Ohio 2 1/2 years ago and have not been able to make any really good friends due to the situation so I really feel all alone and my family, with the exception of my 18 year old son, isin Ohio. Thank You for listening and God Bless, dr1

Dr1...so glad you are here...and I can tell you from experience that your proactiveness with your son, even without a diagnosis, is paramount, as he is exhibiting some symptoms.

You are not alone...there are many of us that are parenting disabled children...

What can we do to help?

Dr1 wow. Thank you for sharing your situation. It helps me to realize that I have it pretty darn good.

We have a great birth to 3 program here in my home state and I hope you have something similar out there. I hear your pain with the inability to express at the age of 2...my daughter didn't speak full sentences until she was 7! We worked with sign language and it was the greatest gift our speech therapist gave us...a book filled with simple signs that opened a whole new world for my daughter.

I'm the mom of a beautiful 17 year old girl with Down Syndrome.

Hi all! Just found this group. I'm actually not a parent of a special needs child. I'm not a parent of anyone. But I worked with special needs kids for about five years as a Music Therapist. I'm not working in that field anymore but I still have a special place in my heart for special needs kids, esepcially those in the autism/aspergers spectrum. I hope it's okay that I joined the group.

Hello everyone. Let me do a formal introduction. I'm the father of a wonderful 5 year old with mild autism. Luckily he is very verbal(when he wants to be) and very affectionate. I have him on the weekends and some extra time depending on my work schedule. I'm so glad he is part of my life. He is total fun to be around.

For those parents that have children with special needs, please check in your area for support groups. My area(TN) has Autism support groups for most counties. These support groups are great resources for learning how to get services for your children. I know without my local support group, I would be totally lost.

I hope to talk more with everyone here about issues facing us as parents of special needs kids.
