All my life I've been very particular about my things that reside in locations other than at home.

In school, where many of my classmates would leave their lockers unlocked, I made extra sure that mine was neat and secure...at all times.

Out at the barn, I have a tack box used for holding brushes, tack and other things for the horses. While the box itself has changed over the years (note: I've been riding since 4th grade) I have always made sure to have a box that could be locked. On top of that, I've always made sure that said box was locked! Either with a combination lock or a key lock. (Though I do have one small one now near my colt that remains unlocked but that is due to other people needing to get in to the supplies for the colt.) I've always justified keeping my box locked up because 1.) kids have a tendency to rumage through the boxes to find things they need...and then not put them back, and 2.) its a health risk, should one horse get a skin condition, and the brushes get passed around, all the horses end up with the same skin condition.

Over the past several years, I've carefully gathered DVD and book collections. I try to keep them neat and orderly at home. On rare occasions I've tried to break out of this "possessive" streak and share said items. I've loaned books and DVDs out to friends. For awhile I got them back without a problem. I have one set of DVD's that have never been returned to me though... the only reason it doesn't bother me is because it was the "whole" set ... I'm not missing a part of it. On the other hand, I loaned some books out and received only part of the set back... that irritates me to no end... unlike the DVDs. Something about only having part of a set really bugs me, more than loosing an entire set.

I like helping others...but I'm beginning to think I'm going to just stop loaning things out to other people. I'm not sure if this is paranoia, or some nerdy trait to make sure everything is where it belongs, in order, etc. (or maybe I've spent too much time hanging out with librarians!)

For me it is very important that everything has its place, and is in its place. I can't stand living in a messy home; that really bothers me.

However, my view on possessions is that if God is generous enough to share them with me, He didn't do it for me to be selfish toward others. If I don't get something back then either I can live without it, or I can replace it. There are, of course, certain things I don't loan out- my cat & my computer for example. Well, my main computer- I've been known to loan other computers.

From Shakespeare's Hamlet, 1603:

LORD POLONIUS:
Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

That reminds me of the song my mom used to sing to me

Never a borrower or a lender be
Lest ye forget, stay out of debt

I'd loanso much stuff I'd actually forget it was gone. I started making a list and charging fines like the library. Of course I never enforced it. I'm such a wimp. Truly, I'm only hyper about my kitchen toys (I LOOOOVE kithchen toys)not being returned on timebecause I need them to work. I could couldn't care less about a book, but my blender? Ya' don't wanna' go there.

Amen to that. Shakespeare was a man ahead of the times.

I think we all have a little OCD in us - however it does tend to run stronger in the nerdy crowd (English majors, Librarians, etc.) I wouldn't call it paranoia tho
