I think the reports are right in some areas... some of the certifications have become rather lax in their standards. The reports DID say that some certifications are MUCH better than others and are still valued by employers. I think the CCNA is among those that are still highly valued.
The Cisco certifications are ridiculously hard. As far as I know, CCNA is still good to have!

Well, I would do the Cisco certs over the coding certs anyday. The one that got me was the CISSP. Afte 150 questions, my eyes started crossing with 100 more to go. Although it's not as difficult as the Cisco certs, there's alot of info and questions to go through!!! Yikes...that was a doozer. CCNA is good and now I hear they have different tracks like wireless and security. I already have my CCNP and am soooo glad I don't have to go through the mumbo of getting re-certified. Good luck on the CCNP!!!!

Coming back from BlackHat and Defcon, it looks like the skillset has definately changed to the web coding apps like php, sql and .net. More so securing those web apps. Also good ones to get into are forensics and now VMWare type certs. Looks like the industry is moving to that whether we like it or not.

I would recommend picking up a few switches and maybe a couple of routers off of ebay and builing your own lab and practicing. Once you get in the flow of day to day, it starts flowing naturally. I would focus on the switching more than anything. One thing I really recommend is to take your time and focus on one exam at a time instead of the whole series. Once you've passed one, then focus on the next in line. It makes it so much easier to swallow instead of constantly putting pressure on yourself like I did. You've already got your CCNA, so the battle is already half won. Most of the stuff you see in the CCNA will be covered on the CCNP as well.

Hey Hobb, when you got your NP, did you take the composite + 2 tests, or did you do 4 separate tests?

I did 4 separate tests. Routing, Switching, ONT, which is a little voip and QOS, and ISCW which is wireless, security (mostly security device manager) and VPN's (mostly the vpn module off of the routers using both command line and security device manager).

I don't know if the format has changed since then. I passed and haven't looked back. I'm actually going to need to renew it, but I just have pass another cert exam from the cipt or the ccsp series.

I tried the composite test, which I believe combines the ISCW and Switching into one. WOW that test is a monster! required score: 790. My score: 777. 13 points? 13 POINTS!? >_<
