That's wonderful but it seems like you're saying is that the random act of kindness is for yourself. (Perhaps if there were random acts of charity, or whatever would be the proper name, it would be all about helping others even when you don't feel like it.)

I just like living in a world where people do these things, it's nicer. It offsets all the negativity and bad stuff, all the violence, war, meanness. It's the opposite of sociopathy.

I clean up litter, dog poop etc from neighbors' yards when I come across it, but not from my next-door neighbor's yard because he is the neighbor from hell. All the neighbors hate him and no one does nice things for him. So nasty people don't receive much in the way of RAKs, which probably makes them even nastier.

Should I extend RAKs to include the jerk next door?

Doing RAKs makes me feel more connected to my community. It's a Tribal thang. I bet cave people did little favors for each other. Non-humans don't appear to do RAKs. I'm guessing we're wired to do them because they have survival value (darwin).

(or maybe because animals don't have the same sense of time so they have no idea about effecting future events.)

I believe in RAK's simply because its a way of showing love for someone. We should love our neighbors as ourselves.I think a neighbor is not just someone living close by, but someone on our planet. And as I have heard...Love makes the world go round!.
I have been the recipient of several acts of kindness. One was when I had the flu and was out shoveling 2 feet of packed snow from the end of my drive so I could get the car out. Someone came along and saw me struggling and took my shovel and finished the job. No name left or thanks wanted. Another time a trucker stopped to change my flat tire in the rain. When I offered him money he just said pay it forward. I try to do that as often as I can.

I'm not necessary in disagreement with this but I wonder what it means to you (and others).

Should we love our neighbors as ourselves? Any requirements for that? It almost sounds like 'unconditionally love your neighbors'... I can see respecting them (until evidence comes along to not to) but am I reading into this?

I am going to disagree here because I feel that we need to have more Purposeful acts of kindness and make it a way of life to be kind. I purposefully try to always be kind and do unto others as I would want them to do to me. I definitely am not perfect in this but I work at it. There is too much selfishness in the world and I would rather be a change maker for the good rather than continue to contribute to the negative that I see in the world. I pray that my example will affect others to put others before themselves. There is great rewards in doing this! My motto Teach one, show one, be one. I hope by my example it will teach and show so that others also will be kind in their actions towards others. Be purposeful daily to walk in kindness towards others whether you know the recipients or not. :-)

Design: This is a quote from Jesus when He was being tested by a lawyer on what could he do to inherit eternal life. Jesus answered him and said YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. Luke 10: 27. In Matthew and Mark, Jesus also says the same but adds that these are the greatest commandments. In Luke, the lawyer continues his questions and asks Jesus who his neighbor is. 30Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.

31"And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32"Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
33"But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
34and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
35"On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.'
36"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?" 37And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."

The significance of the meaning that Jesus used in this story was the fact that a jewish man was robbed and left for dead and 2 of his own - levite and priest- did not stop to help him. But a Samaritan man did. The jews and samaritans hated each other. Not only did the samaritan man help his enemy but he also provided for whatever his needs were while he recovered. Jesus asked who was the neighbor and it was the one who had compassion and showed mercy not because the jewish man deserved it but because it was the right thing to do. And then Jesus says to go and do the same--not because somone deserves it or has earned our respect but because it is the right thing to do and it is demonstrating that we kove others as we love ourself. We should unconditionally love at all times and show mercy.
