Where does a purpose in life come from? What if you don't believe in god? How do you arrive at your purpose? How do you know it's worthy of you?

Anything and everything about authoring, developing, instilling, and fulfilling your own purpose. (Or why you don't have one and don't think you need one.)

Its up to you to decide what your purpose is. We each have to find our own way in the world, and take responsibility for our own choices. The human life cycle is temporary, its up to you to make the most out of this brief existence. Embrace the freedom of being completely in charge of your life.

I study psychology, and it gives me tremendous satisfaction to understand as much as i can about the brain, how it evolved, and how it shapes our behavior and mental life. My purpose is to uncover new facts about the mind, and contribute new data to this body of knowledge. This is enough for me. I don't need ancient myths about invisible 3-in-1 deities to give my life meaning.

It's true that we all have to find our own way and decide what we want to do with this one life we are given. I can't imagine life without my faith. My mission and my purpose come from my belief in what comes after my 80ish years in this life. Therefore, I don't find value in living just for myself and I don't buy into the popular opinion that success and stuff brings a happy life.

My motto is sort of expounding on the "live for the moment" "treat each day as if it was your last", etc. And since I believe that I will be spending a lot more time in the afterlife than I will be spending in this one, I add to my purpose, "live simply so that other can simply live" "consider the needs of others over you own". Simplicity allows me just what I need and a little of what I want. I get the best of both worlds; true peace and enjoyment of this life and a firm foundation for the next! I certainly don't want to spend all my years acquiring wealth and "stuff" I'm just gonna leave behind!

This is an important question for us all to consider and own in ourselves. When we feel purpose, life is better. Look forward to hearing from others.

Imagine that a neighbor tells you that there's a diamond buried in her backyard that's the size of a refrigerator. And when you ask her why she believes this she says things like:

a.)My mission and my purpose come from my belief that there's a diamond buried in my backyard that's the size of a refrigerator.

b.) I can't imagine life without a diamond buried in my backyard that's the size of a refrigerator.

Are any of these statements adequate enough to convince you that she's right?

American Indians had a Visionquest to answer that. Americans can read the book "Think and Grow" rich that covers this subject.

Bottomline it's an inner voice that tells us. Problem is that today that inner voice is more obscured than ever before.

I think there are areas in each of our lives that we feel intensely or passionately about. Whether it is an issue of justice, music, animals, children, environment, or etc. etc. It is when we can take our passions and put it together with our life's work, that it becomes our "Mission Statement." For me, it is very much combined with my faith. It not only gives me a sense of purpose but a sense of mission and passion as to why it motivates me. But I do acknoweledge that someone who may not have faith can also have a passion that drives them and defines their life's purpose. My only question would be, what would help the one who doesn't believe, to keep going when burned out, or discouraged, if their mission and sense of purposed doesn't come from something else beyond themselves.

Same as faith would provide...perspective.

But my question to you is "How do you know, when the motive is external, that you're not simply just trying to do something to gain the validation/love from that source as opposed to getting what you really want?"

We allow a lot of noise into our lives. We engage in passive hobbies to entertain us, like watching tv, which allow us to avoid thinking for awhile. We listen to music in the car, & with MP3 players, almost anywhere we want. We talk to others constantly. Even blogs and this forum is a way to talk about our ideas, but we always hear others voices as well. I'm not saying that we should form all our ideas without including others in our decisions, but I think many times we allow others to do our thinking for us. We don't think and we don't listen to our inner voice. We fill our lives with busyness and forget to live.

I agree that we spend too little time on focused thought. I agree that we escape these thoughts through food, tv, etc. In that respect they offer the same effect as drugs.

But my question before your reply was 'how do we know we're really acting for ourselves and not just looking for others' approval'?
