"...atheist, humor, and science religion",... "The Chuch of A.H.S.", I like it (and we could all begin by reciting the Periodic Table, and pocket protectors would become a "sacred vestment")!! Think of the tax benefits!!

I think it's actually a good thing that no one can prove there's no god because if that happened there would be horrendous chaos. I continue to think religion was perhaps a better invention than the wheel.

That's a tough exam, Dennis. I can only come up with this answer for now :

3. Gives people a way to release tension (singing) from the previous week. Being absolved of your sins of the week before allows you to put those things in your past and move on.
Alternatives to this?

Accept that you are a fallible human being. You can make mistakes. You can make an effort and become a better person in time (even though it won't happen overnight). You don't need a priest to tell you this. It is so.

If anything, the religious ceremony here was catering to people with low self-esteem, who don't have the personal resources to believe it when they tell themselves "it's ok". Well, this is a case where "independent thought" has its advantages. If someone can only believe that "it's ok" when someone else tells them, I would suggest counseling (as in therapy). Ok. Mebbe I'm being a little too mean.

I was an active Unitarian for several years. There were atheists in the congregation, but they were not as militant as Dennis. Our services were about seeking truth and promoting good in the community. We were heavily into volunteerism and social welfare. I think Dennis won't fit in anywhere but his own cult!
