Anyone bothered by the fact that some sports teams have bigger budgets then some disease research centres?...
Which would fill a stadium faster: a cure or a cup?

Yeah I can understand how some Scientific Enthusiasts and humanitarians would get upset with the amount of money we dump into things that really don't produce much in the long run. But you have to admit that watching two teams of people, slamming each other over an oblong ball, is way more entertaining than watching a computer sequence DNA.

Would we be comfortable with scientists as rock stars? Einstein was one of those people. Back in the day before TV, baseball and football were really big, scientists and inventors, along with musicians and actors were it.

Trouble is, when it comes to drugs, many researchers work for corporations and there is little incentive for these corporations to advertise who does what. That is too bad because if there was a little more glamour in the industry our children may become more interested in the sciences.

I respect it more for having no glamour. I trust it more because it is apolitical by nature. In some cases the wanton pursuit of knowledge can be refreshingly amoral as well. Why are we researching X? To learn more about Y. An over simplification...

I think what I'm trying to get at is Science is in the realm of academia where we learn facts just to know facts. There's little room for agenda in the scientific method.

I like the scientific approach to things; impartial, unbiased, and open new information at all times, mainly because I think it would be great if more people got their facts straight before taking an intractible stance on anything.
Sports medicine has, by the sheer volume of injury, helped make some of the more recent medical advances occur, but it is a sad fact that the average age of death for an NFL athlete is around 56yrs old.

I'd be curious to know what the most common causes of death for them are. That might be pretty telling in and of itself.

I could be wrong, but I think I was reading about this in the University of California Berkely health letter, so you might try there for the details. But I think the main causes of their early demise were mainly brain injury... as it turns out taking examples of athletic/genetic excellence and having them bang heads for extended peroids isn't good for them.. who knew?..

You mean concussions aren't good for the brain? I guess the cliche "what ever doesn't kill you makes your stronger" doesn't apply here.
