Hello Harry,

I just cant believe a parent who was truely worried abouth thier child failing a class would write you such a letter. If I was said parent and my child was failing your class I would request suggestions on how I could assist (short of clobbering him/her and me going to jail) my child in getting a passing grade, but then again my child would not have a social life until homework was completed.

I suppose you could reply would be in Spanish that should confuse said parent lol... Maybe they can get thier child to translate!

So I received an email yesterday from a parent concerned because they happened to notice (only 9 weeks into semester) that their child was failing my class (Spanish 1). And I quote:

XXXX has trouble with dates and deadlines. Would it be possible to let him hand in his homework whenever he remembers to complete it? Also, is it *really* necessary for him to speak Spanish? I realize that you teach Spanish, but XXXX doesn't like to speak in front of people. Can he be excused from this requirement?...etc.

I responded in the manner that we as teachers (by law) must respond. Constructively, using positive reinforcement and explaining why speaking was -sadly- a non-negotiable requirement.

However.....

The gloves are off at CSC!

If YOU were to answer this letter (without the politically correct constraints that most teachers have to recognize), how would you have responded?

Please take note: This is very cathartic for me!
Dear Mr./Mrs. So-and-so,

I have also noticed that your son is failing my Spanish class and we are only 9 weeks into the semester. This might be a new record for underachievement in Spanish. I'm sure your contribution to his character development has had a strong hand in his academic performance. Congratulations to you! You must be so proud!

I understand your concern about your son's homework deadlines and his shyness about speaking Spanish. Yes, he can turn in his homework whenever he feels like it, even after deadlines, and he doesn't need to try to speak Spanish in class. He's already failing now with these requirements in place, so it probably makes no difference whether he does these things or not.

I am looking forward to spending time with your son in this class again next semester. I think he is too, since he is doing all the right things to ensure he will be back. He must really like me. I think I might even be able to look forward to years of wonderful correspondence with you as well.

Please keep in touch as I greatly value the opinions of people who think they know how I should teach my class.

I've been, it's old and cold! I use to live in Dartmouth, Devon, on and off for about 10 years, also very very old!

What we get here is "I'm going to do (something) when I get back to the states". Excuse me, but last time I looked Hawaii was the 'states'.

Dear Parent:
I am retiring this year and do not need the job security of returning students. Your little prince may turn in any and all assignments whenever or if he chooses. I on the other hand will assign him an Incomplete, which will automatically turn into a failing grade two weeks after the end of the semester. His/your choice. I do hope that you are planning to relocate to his choosen college to assist in his future progress and then providing additional space for all the grandchildren that will be produced when he fails to take basic precautions with any female that will spawn with him. Do you understand the concept of shallow gene pool?
