jesus does speak about the resurrection of the dead in the book of mark.

Jesus replied, "...When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

and, of course, one would presume that christ could not bodily return to the earth at the end of the age without first being resurrected...

As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"

"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"

Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

"You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

"When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that this will not take place in winter, because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

"But in those days, following that distress,
" 'the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

"At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' "

a few more- and again, who is the Son Of Man?

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

mark 8:31-38

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what "rising from the dead" meant.

mark 9:9&10

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid.

Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. "We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise."

The resurrection of the body is a hallmark of the Christian faith. Jesus didn't just conquer death spiritually, He conquered it by rising in His physical body. This is why there is such an emphasis on the cloths He was wrapped in being left in the tomb. This is also why He reappeared to Thomas, who was not in the room the first time, so that He could dispell the doubts Thomas had that Jesus had indeed risen. He told Thomas to touch the wounds in his hands and in his side so Thomas would know Jesus was not just spiritually but bodily resurrected, even though He could walk through locked doors. Then there is the story of meeting the two men on the road to Emmaus. Jesus purposely stayed with them when they invited Him in to eat with them so they would know who He was and also for us to know He was more than just spirit. Finally, when Christ rose again to heaven. He did so on the clouds and His disciples watched Him ascend to heaven in a physical form. If He had been just spiritual, He would have just disappeared without the use of clouds.

Pray tell, where in the book of Mark Jesus mets with any believers after he died. Mark is the only eyewitness account. The other gospels were written generations after the tale they told. And Paul who wrote Acts was even latter.

Humm, it does seem you're only christain because you ant eternal life. Doesn't sound very moral to me; and not what Jesus taught. You have to be good fo its own sake, and like Jesus showed us, we all die and then nothing. That is the point of his teaching.
Thanks for your response. I do want to respond to you about your statements. I reread the Gospel of Mark to try to see how you came up with your suppositions.

First of all, Matthew and John were also eyewitnesses of Christ as His disciples. Mark was not one of the original 12 disciples but a believer in Christ. Luke was a physician and wrote his gospel for Theophilus and then followed with writing the book of Acts. Paul wrote much of the New Testament but is not the author of Acts. As a physician, Luke interviewed eyewitnesses and did the research for his gospel. A generation implies at least 30 years, so generations would be >60 years, and I believe that all the Gospels were written within the lifetime of the original 12 disciples. Acts is also a historic record of the early church, Paul’s travels/ministry, and the working of the Holy Spirit. It is presumed to be written within the first century.

In response to your original post, I want to list a few references from Mark to validate my statements. Jesus did not teach we all die and then nothing, He taught and demonstrated quite to the contrary. In Mark 8: 38 He states- 38"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." Jesus talks about the future when he will return again.During his ministry it says he had compassion, healed the sick, cast out demons, did many miracles, and taught about the Kingdom of God.

He taught his disciples about his death in Mark 9:31 31For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later." Again in Mark 10:32-34 32They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, 33saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34"They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again." Jesus foretold what would happen to Him so that His disciples would not fear and would know that He would be resurrected. In Mark 16, it tells about how 3 women went to the grave to perform the ritual of anointing the body since it was not done before he was buried and they couldn’t come on the Sabbath to do it. When they arrive the stone is rolled away, a man in a white robe greets them and tells them that Jesus is not there and to look at the grave to see. This man in white tells them that Jesus is risen and that they need to tell Peter and the other disciples that Jesus is going to Galilee to meet them just as He told them. The women are afraid and don’t tell the disciples so Jesus comes to Mary and shows Himself first to her. She then goes to tell the disciples and they refuse to believe her. He then appeared to 2 others who also reported his resurrection to the disciples who again refused to believe. Then Jesus appeared to the 11 disciples (judas was dead) and He expressed His disappointment at their unbelief and hardness of heart for not believing those testified of His resurrection. Jesus taught about the Kingdom of God during His ministry and after the resurrection instructed His disciples to go everywhere preaching about the good news.

As for my being a Christian only because I want eternal life is not accurate. I don’t want eternal life because I already have eternal life and so does everyone else. We all have a spirit that will live on when our body dies. The question is do I want to live in the Kingdom of God or outside of it? I am a Christian because I had a radical encounter with the living risen Christ that changed my life forever just like Paul who had a radical encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus. This encounter so changed Paul that he went from being a persecutor to a proponent and witness for Christ. He risked everything so that all could know about Jesus and His Kingdom. I also want to be with the One who has cleansed my soul and made me alive. I want to be with the Lover of my soul, the One who loves me like no other. I want to remain forever in His Kingdom. I do not want to be separated from Him.

If we die and then there is nothing, then what is the meaning and purpose of life? Was the life and ministry of Jesus only to show us good works? Then what was the purpose of his death to teach us how to be good martyrs?

I believe that Jesus came so that we might have life. He died, was buried, and rose again on the third day. He ascended into heaven. And when the time is fulfilled, He will come again in His glory to establish His Kingdom. I want to live under the rule of the King of kings and Lord of lords. Every eye shall see Him and every knee shall bow to His authority. Some will bow and only acknowledge his authority because He is the King and be resentful of His rulership, while others like myself will bow in humble adoration rejoicing in His majesty and reign. I am grateful to the One who has set me free and given me new life. His love is overwhelming and neverending towards me. I am His daughter and child and I never want to go back to who I was before He made me whole.

So yes I am a Christian but it is by choice because of His love for me. I definitely am not perfect and make a lot of mistakes. I often am not good and don’t always walk as I should. But I know that He still loves me and is working within me to change me into the person that He desires me to be.

Of course I'm being serious. No where in Mark does Jesus say he will be resurrected in body. Remember Mark is the 1st gospel. Nor is there any account of anyone claiming such in Mark. The whole point was Jesus giving up his life; not taking a 3 day vocation in a cave. You are required to respect god. Full stop. Not because of any reward. But because it is the right thing to do. Are you suggesting that Christians are only “nice” because they expect to escape death. That makes em sound pretty callous. And it just isn’t in the bible!

From Mark Chap 9
7Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" 8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what "rising from the dead" meant.

Unlike us - Jesus could never be spiritually dead. His only death was the physical death on the cross of the physical body He took on out of His love for us. So - when He instructed the disciples that the Son of Man would be risen from the dead - it was His physical body he was referring to.

As for your statement about Christians respecting God because it is the right thing to do - or being nice in order to escape death..... that is essentially backwards. Being a Christian is simply accepting the beautiful gift of salvation and letting Christ into our hearts. Salvation is about grace - our "works" are irrelevant unless we accept Christ's sacrifice. We love God because He first loved us (i.e. it isn't the cause of salvation, it is the result of salvation). We are "nice" because if we have Christ in our hearts AND we submit to His direction then we will have His love for humanity (i.e. not the cause of salvation but the result of salvation and the desire to live a fulfilled Christian life). We live by certain standards (at least those of us who want to live a fulfilled Christian life) because we are accountable to a higher authority who sees every action, hears every word, and even knows our every thought (again, not the cause of salvation, but the result of salvation)

(note - didn't see the second page where notyet added these verses after posting - will pay more attention next time :-)

I thought that this would be a non-dabate post thread, but it seems that "Fleuellen" managed to turn it into a debate after all...

Did any of you hear about the Andrew Wommack Ministiries? You can hear about the dead being brought back to life even in todays days if you go on his website and listen to his teachings.

I thought that this would be a non-dabate post thread...
that was during the "undead" period of the POs existence- between the time the owner removed her profile two months ago and now. in the interim, a few of us continued to post here. eHa thought they had deleted this group. thankfully, they had not. we asked for it back and eHa consented. lori, to credit her again because she deserves it, was instrumental to getting this back for us.

i believe it is the consensus of the all of us here that this is and will remain a debate free forum. rough and tumble will continue in CS. i am fine with that. i think Christian Singles is well suited for that. and while none of us will agree on everything here- this is not meant to be a place where we seek doctrinal unity- i am not looking to ban discussions of doctrine either.

this is meant to be a place where christians can share in safety with other christians without scoffers and bomb throwers continually stirring up the waters.

at least that is what i am hoping for. val made an admirable effort at reaching that goal. i hope this incarnation is half as successful.
