Some biblical sources point to people in the bible having multiple wives? Why is having multiple wives/concubines a violation of modern law when it was common practice in older days and God's law says nothing against it? Do you think it's a trend that will be coming back in the near future? Will I be able to have multiple wives when I get married? I'm excited! What do you all think?

(Please no humor in this thread, this is a serious topic. I don't want to hear any cracks about "one wife is enough burden")

Women are no longer considered property in modern times, and therefore polygamy is not longer legal or socially acceptable in western societies.

Read 1 Timothy 13 and Titus 1. Both chapters discuss guidelines for church leaders in the early Christian church and suggest that elders and deacons have one wife.

While I'm no theologian, I understand these texts as providing wisdom to church leaders, giving them tools of practice that would help them be effective as leaders so they can best serve their families and their church. I'm sure there are many reasons why multiple wives are not ideal but one might just be to ensure the vibrancy of the Christian community and to add another protection against some of less desirable human traits that so often bring down well meaning organizations.

Certainly multiple wives did not always work in the husbands favor and sometimes added to family strife. Consider the Old Testament examples of Abraham and Jacob.

I would be interested in hearing other interpretations and modern day applications to these.

Lol hey cloud, I fell like i am repeating myself man lol. Dood, our best example is Christ, he had one bride, the church. He would not lie with the world, IE unrepentant sinners. So if you want to mirror Christ, get with the program and fallow his example for your life buddy (=.

i am not advocating it but the only proscription against multiple wives in the bible is for those in church leadership positions. god explicitly told david through nathan that god had given david his multitude of wives and then implies that had david wanted more, god would have granted that request.

our current proscription on polygamy has more to do with germanic culture than with eastern tradition and biblical teaching.

that being said, since we are to obey the laws of the land we live in, as long as they do not contradict scripture, current law in this country forbids polygamy.

for that reason and others, i would not recommend it.

4And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,5And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?6Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

We have in Jesus own words when teaching about divorce and going back to the beginning.
We have a man referred to and his wife. These are both singular refferences. We have the picture of only two being joined together and becomming one and no other mention in the mix. So this is the perfect will of God for marriage. Why God allowed multiple wives for a time I can only speculate. But it could have been for the growth of the population. Your guess is as good as mine. The thing is whoever thinks him self man enough to have multiple wives beware of your pride. I see that it takes a man to just love one woman for a life time and that is challenge enough in its self.

Well this is all very interesting here guys. The only reason that multiple wives started in the Bible is because of sin. Laban lied and deceived Jacob. David took Bathsheba because of sin. Solomon took wives and concubines as political favors. All were related to sin and it does not give us the justification to have multiple wives today. God created Adam and one Eve, not Eve 1, Eve 2, Eve 3 etc. His purpose is for man and woman to be one in Him and so any more women than the one makes a crowd. God does a lot of things where He uses symbolism and man, woman, and the Lord are like a picture of Him- the godhead 3 in 1. So if there are more women it really messes up the picture and is a perversion of the original. So no, dude. Multiple wives is sin and really not in God's plan. Do you really think you could make more than one wife happy? There will always be jealousy and strife.
