Psalm 23
A Psalm of David.
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
I would like to know your thoughts on this Psalm. How we could encourage those who are hurting through these beautiful words.

Hi Craig,

I really like this Psalm. I reckon it is a promise. Everytime I read the Footprints poem I am reminded of this Psalm.

That people aren't alone or don't have to be alone through times of trouble. Caring concern for others.

Meri.

Meri, I remember the first time I had to go to the court house for custody of my daughter. I was scared out of my mind and felt all alone there.
In the waiting room I closed my eyes and began to pray to God in my mind.
One of my faviorite scriptures is - br anxious for nothing but in all things through prayer and supplication with thankgiving. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and mind through Christ jesus.

I have this one memorised due to needing it so much. But the thanksgiving part is key. It takes our mind off of our situation and places it on God who we have much to be thankful for.

But any way. I began to surrender my fear over to God there in the watiing room. I also realised that I might be the only person that knew God in the whole building. That their were other hurting people as well. So I began to pray for the whole building and the people in it.
God performed a great work in my heart and filled me with His love so greatly that I was bubbling over. I felt like I could hardly contain my joy. It was interesting to think what the people accross from me were thinking. I am sure that they would have to have seen a change in my face.
Anyway my Lord led me beside the cool water and green pasture that day. I could tell you more about what happened with my lawyer in the meeting but for another time.

Hi. There is so much in this Psalm I think a minister preached a whole year of sermons on it alone!

I like it for it's simplicity: God provides for us, He guides us, and He protects us.

It's up to us to take hold of His provisions, His guidance, and His protection.

Peace.

I find it ironic that so many people in the world today refer to others as "sheep" and mean it as an insult.
God calls us sheep and means it with affection - even for those of us who have no experience herding sheep, this psalm is beautiful and comforting.
This psalm was written by a shepherd. A shepherd who knew what it was like to kill a bear in the night because it was attacking his sheep, then get up before daybreak to search for a good pasture with still water (because sheep are scared of running water.) He knew what it was like to carry an injured lamb on his shoulders through rough country. This psalm is one of the shorter ones, but it is full of so much imagery.
I think the best way to share this with the world is by showing them what it looks like - when they see us at rest, and having peace even in the most terrifying situations, when they see us trusting and being provided for even when it looks like there is no hope, then they can't help realizing there's something different going on.

May the grace of God fill you until it overflows onto everyone around you.
