My weight has been a struggle for many years. Now that I have had very strong advice from my doctor to loose weight and drop blood pressure and cholesteral levels I'm headed for a big challenge. The doctor gave me 4 months to give it a try on my own. I'm determined. I work the night shift so it's very difficult to obtain good eating habits. Yesterday I made the first step, I joined a gym. Now I need to make sure I get there. Any advice out there to help me along?

Diet is also important. A lot of times you can pre cook stuff and it's easier to eat that way.

If you just focus on your health and what will happen to you if you don't go workout. That should be able to motivate you. Plus seeing progress feels good!

" I work the night shift so it's very difficult to obtain good eating habits."

Then get some tupperware and start cooking and taking fruit and making it impossible to eat badly.

Hi tuxx and welcome!

There are a bunch of great quick-fixes you can make to your diet that will go a long way and help augment your efforts at the gym -- and impress the heck out of both your doctor and yourself!

1. whole grain bread instead of white bread

2. whole wheat pasta instead of regular -- and watch those portions! Add lots of chunky vegetables to your sauce so you can still feel full even when eating less pasta.

3. Brown rice instead of white rice. The taste IS different but you get used to it and I noticed that brown rice fills me up MUCH faster than regular white rice.

If you're not a cooker and you eat out you can usually ask for these substitutions....fried rice made with brown rice is just as yummy and more healthy than the alternative (you should also ask for it with less oil).

All of the fast food places have some healthy alternatives -- this article can help:

Hope this helps! Please keep us posted on your progress!
