Hi,

I joined e-harmony as a paying member a couple of weeks ago, and am trying to puzzle something out. Here's the thing:

1) I get about 7-8 new matches a day
2) I have sent icebreakers to about 4 matches who I'd like to communicate with.
3) All of those matches are active very recently (today/yesterday). At the risk of being considered a stalker I've checked these matches once or twice since that initial communication and yes, it still says they are active today/yesterday. So we're not talking about 'dead' matches here.
4) NONE of them have even viewed me.

I don't get it?!

I understand that they might all be non-paying members and therefore unable to respond to my communication and see a photo of me. I also understand that if they are paying members they might not want to respond to me (mind you, none of them have closed me either).

But I just don't get why these active members who I have contacted haven't even viewed me? None of them?

So I am left wondering:
1) Is the view counter dodgy? (I only get 1, maybe 2 views a day)
2) Do non-members not appear in the view counter and so they might be viewing me and I just don't know it?

I'm confused and (as you can probably tell) somewhat frustrated

The one thing you forgot to consider is.. those matches might think you're a NPM for using IB's..

My guess is you were archived by those matches. A
lot of people don't take the step to close matches in their archive folder..

If I recall correctly (and I could be wrong) ice-breakers don't move you into their communication tab. So it allows them to keep you in the archive folder without taking action..

You'd be better off sending your 1st set of questions then IB's..Which will automatically display the close button..

As far a the view counter goes.. I highly doubt you're running into that many grandfathered members who have the option to hide their views..

I'm not sure if IB's work like the GC questions, but if I click on the questions or reply a match sent me, then it doesn't register as a view. For it to register as a view, I would have to access your profile first.

So my advice, stop using the IB's and just send the 1st set of questions...

Good luck and welcome to the boards ,and the wonderful world of eH..

OK. That would make sense (at least from what I can understand of the eH lingo!). So essentially you think have viewed me, but did so directly from the communication and so it hasn't registered as a view. And then they have archived me (either because they are not interested, think I am NPM or both) and have not closed the match?

If that is the case then is it poor etiquette for me to send those guys the 1st questions, even though they have not responded to my IB? I guess I don't have much to lose but also don't want to break some unwritten eH rule...

Hmmm - I wish I had known all of these subtleties when I first signed up.

BTW - What does 'grandfathered' mean?

Yep..

That's right you don't have much to lose, if they close you..no big deal..

An older member who has a feature not offered to newer members..

Members used to have a choice to show their views as anonymous..The who's view me section had a counter titled "anonymous views".. Even though there are many long-time subscribers you had to be using this feature to have been grandfathered.

It's not poor etiquette...and you have nothing to lose.

We've been saying that here, forever...supposedly they're listening...
Supposedly.

It means that some features(that have been eliminated) are available to members who have older subscriptions..

And keep in mind, also, that this software they use/write is about as reliable as a Yugo.

You have mentioned this before. I joined (as a paying member) in January 2008. When the Anonymous View setting was removed it was removed for me also. So I don't know how "old" of a member you would have to be to be "grandfathered" into a feature. When I first joined there was not even a Who's Viewed Me at all.

While there has in the past been a period of time during the rollout of a new feature when new members had a feature (or downgrade) and older members did not. However, as far as I know there are NO features available to long time members from times gone by that are not available to everyone.

Well I would consider 3 years to be a long time...

Anyways Nightling just posted yesterday she still has this feature. I had it up until xmas, when I unchecked it, the next day it was gone for good..

If you weren't using it when eH decided to remove it, then they took it away.. seems only the people that were actually using it...got to keep it..

Samething happened when the photo controls were removed. I had for about year after they stopped offering it, then they finally removed it all together..

This is normal. The number of matches you get each day is limited so that you have time to look at each one and either communicate or close.
2) I have sent icebreakers to about 4 matches who I'd like to communicate with.
IceBreakers are widely viewed as an indication that the person is a non-paying member. Most people won't respond to an IceBreaker and many close if they receive one. FWIW I do respond to IceBreakers and I have also never had a match that sent one to ever respond. Just send First Questions!!!
3) All of those matches are active very recently (today/yesterday). At the risk of being considered a stalker I've checked these matches once or twice since that initial communication and yes, it still says they are active today/yesterday. So we're not talking about 'dead' matches here.
See below for comment.
4) NONE of them have even viewed me.
Just as you are getting 7 or 8 new matches each day, your matches are also getting new matches. They may also have begun communicating with several other matches and while they may have some interest in you they are busy with other matches that are ahead of you in their queue.

I don't get it?!

I understand that they might all be non-paying members and therefore unable to respond to my communication and see a photo of me. I also understand that if they are paying members they might not want to respond to me (mind you, none of them have closed me either).

So I am left wondering:

There is no indication (as a long time member) that there is anything wrong with the Who's Viewed Me. (Additional comments below.)
2) Do non-members not appear in the view counter and so they might be viewing me and I just don't know it?
Non-paying members also show up in the Who's Viewed Me.

I'm confused and (as you can probably tell) somewhat frustrated
First a comment on the Active Within. Based on the plethora of posts on this feature I am inclined to believe that it is not working correctly. The other conclusions are that there are a whole bunch of rude people on eHarmony (something that I am becoming more inclined to believe) or there are a lot of non-paying members who are active on the site.

About the Who's Viewed Me. It has been said that if you go to a matches profile by clicking on the communication button by their name that it will not show up as a view. I don't know if this is true or not. If it is true then this would be a problem with how the Who's Viewed Me works IMO. However, in order to read an IceBreaker you don't even need to go to the matches profile.

While this does not exactly apply to your question, if a match goes to your profile and sends you a communication then they won't show up in your Who's Viewed Me.

That is interesting. I never used either Anonymous View or the selective hiding of photos. I just let it all hang out so to speak.

But I found it baffling as to why eHarmony would remove a feature that is working and not causing any site software problems. And if Nightling still has the anonymous view feature then that means that the software for that feature is still there it just gets disabled if you don't have it turned on whenever they removed it. This leads me to wonder if the reason it went away was a screw up by a programmer and not an actual design change.

I have matches who viewed my profile once, then started GC with me. We've been moving along the GC process, but many have only viewed my profile just that once. So, by using the communication button it isn't counting them as viewing my profile.

In this way, I 'anonymously' view matches with delays in OC to see whether they've been online lately or not.
