I turned off Auto-Archiving. For one thing, I can still contact them and who knows, they may actually reply to me.

And to the OP: Most closed matches occurr AFTER communication has begun, whether it is stage 1 to stage 4.

All Archives occur before any communication with the match has occurred.
Thank you . . . that is precisely the information I was looking for.

Unless it has changed recently, auto-archive is for matches who have closed you, and you can't contact them once they have.
Correct.

If they have Closed you, which is where the Auto-Archive feature comes into play, it doesn't matter if they move to the Archive tab (AutoArchive=ON), of whether they stay in the Communicating tab (AutoArchive=OFF), you still will not be able to communicate back with them UNLESS they Reopen you.

This brings up another point to make.

If you like said Match, and hope they might reconsider, although you can't ask them to Reopen you, (without calling eH support), if you don't acknowledge the Close, by Closing it on your side, they will have the option on their side to Reopen the Match.
Thus, for Matches that you like/hope they might reconsider, don't ack the Close, and let them remain in your Communicating/Archive tab... Who knows. They might just reopen you.

PS:
Seriously eH, bring back the "Request Reopen" option already!
