Hi there. I'm very new to online dating and have subscribed to eHarmony for 6 months. So far, I have pretty much sent out questions to nearly every match that had a photo. All matches will either close me (less likely) or look and not close (very likely). I have never gotten any responses to my first set of questions so I figured I'd let you all have a look at my profile and see what I am doing wrong (or what I'm doing right). I am, basically, a computer/videogame/anime geek that enjoys hiking. I tried a bit to tone down the geekyness and focus on the fact that I'm trying to find someone nice someday. Please let me know what I could improve to hopefully get some responses to questions. Thank you. ^^

Basic Information

Occupation: US Navy
Age 26
Height 5' 11"
Wants Kids: Yes
Kids at Home: No
Ethnicity White, non-Hispanic
Religion: Christian
Drinks: A few times a year
Smokes: Never

The one thing I am most passionate about: I love to travel when I can and to take lots of photos along the way. While I'm not a professional photographer, I do enjoy getting a chance to try and capture the perfect photo. Aside from photography, I love to go hiking or to just getting out for a good walk. I also love pets and my family back home. I miss them very much!

The most important thing I am looking for in a person is: I am looking for a woman who values her honesty, loyalty, and morals. Basically, a woman who is a good person who I get along with (like a best friend), who I feel comfortable sharing my life with, doing things with, and getting intimate with. Please no smokers, drug users, or heavy drinkers. I have a hard time being around those kinds of people. ^^;

In my own words

The most influential person in my life has been:

Danny Choo. He's a famous Japan blogger who inspired me to start my own blog on Japan and world travel. He also introduced me to Japan culture and photography. It's thanks to him that I own a proper camera now and have a sizable Japan photo collection.

The three things which I am most thankful for:

  • My family. I love my mom and brothers very much.
  • My health. I value my health and refrain from smoking/drugs/and heavy alcohol use.
  • My friends. I like having people I can come talk to if I am having trouble.

Three of my best life-skills are:

  • Achieving personal goals
  • Maintaining a network of close friends
  • Managing my finances

The one thing I wish MORE people would notice about me:

That I'm really an affectionate guy. I would be happy just cuddling together while watching movies or doing anything ordinary to just enjoy spending time with you.

The things I can't live without are:

  • Family
  • God
  • Coffee!
  • Affection
  • My Laptop

The first thing people notice about me:

I'm a little on the shy and geeky side but that has lessened with age. I'm now at the age where finding my ideal woman and starting a family is more important then my geeky hobbies. Also, people notice that I am a kind person who is a good listener.

Some additional information I want you to know:

I just moved to Hawaii from Japan and don't have that many friends yet. I am hoping to meet someone nice who can show me some good places around the island, talk, and just have fun together. I'm also open to online long distance relationships (skype/e-mail). If we are really compatible, I don't see why it couldn't work out. Hawaii is not my residence for life after all. After my tour here, I will be finishing my 4 year degree (I have an associates already) and will be doing something outside the military.... Look forward to meeting you! ^_^

My interests

I typically spend my leisure time:

Usually, I will spend my leisure time on the internet socializing on twitter, formspring, or watching anime. I also enjoy watching regular movies/shows as well.

The last book I read and enjoyed:

Ender's Game. It's a book about a military genius who is only a child. He is trained in a battle school to ultimately lead human armies against an alien race. I am in the military so many of the themes really clicked with me. I highly recommend reading it if you have not!

According to my friends:

My friends describe me as:

  • Dependable
  • Quiet
  • Good Listener
  • Thoughtful

Photos

I have 11 photos and one of which is a close up of my face while on top of a mountain. The others show full or mid body shots of my Navy life, outside a castle, next to anime robots, and on top of Mount Fuji, exploring the world etc...

"Please no smokers, drug users, or heavy drinkers. I have a hard time being around those kinds of people. ^^"

Is that necessary? Just change your settings that it's important that she doesn't smoke or drink often. Avoid negatives.

The rest I thought looked interesting. Then again, my profile hasn't generated responses, so I may be the wrong one to respond

You are absolutely right. I am removing that now from my profile.

I like your profile a lot. I have a feeling that there is something about your pictures that is turning women off. Do you have pictures with women (even if you cut them out)? Do you have a picture taken in a bathroom mirror?

Is there something else you can put in "The first thing people notice about me" section? Is there anything positive that you can say? Shy and geeky is not a good first impression.

The only reason I would probably close you as a match is because you listed "God" as something you can't live without. But that's just because I'm not religious. If you are looking for a religious girl, then I'm sure "God" is a great choice to have in your profile.

Like a poster said, you don't need the last part...
I'd also leave out the(like a best friend) thing...but that's me.
also the getting "intimate" with statement with can be taken literally, like you are looking for sex quickly...(was that your intent??)so I'd be a little careful there, also...
they might think: yeah, sailor on leave looking to hookup...you get the drift...

Do you actually know Mr. Choo? if so, this is pretty good...if not it comes off a little lame..

forget the "having trouble" statement...no need to go there..

sounds like you are trying a bit too hard , here..

My comments in blue.
Not bad...not great...but, just needs some tweaking..
And I'd put something in there regarding your duties as a sailor, too...
it would help to tone down the geekiness factor.

Thank you all for the constructive criticism. I changed my profile around taking many of the things you said to heart. I think the main reason I wasn't getting replies was that people probably thought I was "just trying to get laid" but that was not the case. I'm so glad I posted this here! Also, I have talked quite a bit with Dannychoo and he even posted a few of my articles on his site. Also, I have seen him in person a couple times and am an active member in his blog community.

As suggested, I toned down my "geekism" further and removed the "shy" part. I did leave a mention of anime on the profile. It's a hobby of mine, so it's best that I have some kind of mention of that before she gets involved with me.

I left the "affectionate" part because it's true, even if it's "trying too hard". ^^;

Also, I removed "God" from the things that I can't live without. I do believe in God but I do not go to church often (only when visiting family). By putting God there, I might make matches thing I was extremely religious. ^^;

Thanks again all for the comments. Here is my new draft of my profile:

I'm the only one in all of my pictures and there's no cut outs or mirror shots. A few images are kind of fuzzy but that's only because I didn't get a DSLR until later.

My brother might be coming over to visit soon, so I will ask him to take some good photos with my DSLR.

Appearance wise, I'm not a "hot" guy and I don't have a ton of muscles, but I am also not that bad looking (in my opinion). I wear glasses, am a little tall, green eyes, brown hair, and I am not fat (quite skinny actually). I don't have a lot of hair though because of my job but lately, I've been trying to grow it out a bit (as long as it's within regs).

Might want to make these short answers rather then bullets so people get a bit of insight on why you chose them.

Mention what anime you like (there are otaku girls out there after all!) you also mentioned you are a gamer, mention a game or two you like playing, list types of movies, tv shows you like. Don't be afraid to show a little geekiness, just don't call yourself a geek! :P
These are all indoor activities, what do you like to get outside and do? Make sure to mention these as well.

List what kind of anime and movies you like. You said you are a gamer, list the latest one you are playing. Make sure to add some stuff you like to do that is away from your computer/tv/house. Don't completely remove the "otaku" from your profile if that is a large part of who you are. I am sure there are girls out there that are as well. My daughter and I both lean that way so we wouldn't close because of it. If you expound on the anime and add gaming I would omit the social networks though.
