It's starting to annoy me when people write really short, one sentence answers for all their responses to open ended questions. When I reply, unless it's a really tough question I'll write a shortish paragraph at least. Alright, I cheat a little and have a set of 'stock' answers which I then tailor to each person but it's still more effort than the thirty second job some people seem to spend on their answers. Trouble is I don't feel I can be too picky as my conversion to OC rate is pretty low, I can always respond in kind but it doesn't bode well for their OC messages if they can't be bothered to put in a bit of effort at this stage...

Nick, I run into the same thing. Just keep doing as you're doing...eventually you'll run into someone like me, and you'll actually have a conversation in OC and later in person. (The people with short answers to those open-ended questions usually fizzle as communicators rather quickly.)

In my opinion, a short answer in open communication tends to indicate a poor communicator.

Yep the people who do this generally don't have a real high interest (remember the open-ended questions are really your first indicator to what their interest is like).

It really all comes down to how much effort they are willing to put forth. If they aren't that interested in you or the site they won't put forth that much effort into their replies to you. If they are highly interested in getting to know you better they will usually put forth the amount of effort to give you a good and (most of the time) timely reply.

It can also indicate an experienced male attempted-online-dater.

Here's what my experience has been: Every word written lessens the chance of receiving a response; less is indeed more.

One can also eventually give-up, or die. () And I think the likelihood of that happening is much greater.

perhaps they have done loads of answers to other folk and got nowhere so now keep their answers short because they are fed up with investing time in answers when most people flake?

But there's no need to write a new answer from scratch each time! It only took me a few months to realize I could save my best responses in a word processing file, and re-use the pertinent bits. Saves a whole lot of time & thinking.

So, the choices are a poor communicator or a jaded, long-time online dater.

Not great choices.

I'd pass on both.

What kind of questions are you asking? Maybe it's time to change them?

I should probably add - the short answers bother me, but I don't close for them. Hope springs eternal....
