it's use in pictures - specifically profile pictures.

Guys how do you feel about this particular "pose". Perusing some of the womens profiles on Match (just to see how they are written and the types of photos posted) , I have come across a few... And it makes me cringe.

What's the general consensus on this "phenomenon"?

It kind of makes me cringe. But according to the data from OkCupid, it apparently improves your message response-rate:

"Now, you’re always told to look happy and make eye contact in social situations, but at least for your online dating photo, that’s just not optimal advice. For women, a smile isn’t strictly better: she actually gets the most messages by flirting directly into the camera..."

The 4 Big Myths of Profile Pictures OkTrends

I'd bet most folks who post in here will be those with pet peeves against it, though.

I've been lucky.
No man has sent me a duck faced profile pic.
Yet.
Of course it would probably be a close if it did happen.

Are we talking about eHarmony profiles? IME on eHarmony having any photo posted is a huge step in the positive direction.

Having viewed thousands of women's profiles I would say that cleavage is very prevalent no matter what the age group. On Match most of my profiles have the requisite beach / pool / bikini shot.
And is that why your still a member?

Its a great topic for this forum.
People want to know why they are not having any success or why they are attracting what they dont want.
Pics say a lot.
